Hi all,

I received my Rel Strata II an hour ago. Was chuffed until I saw that the courier had dropped the box and the bottom corner has chipped. Not ideal, but it's going to be hidden behind the TV anyway, so no biggie.

I see that the recommended connection to use is a Neutrik cable from the speaker outputs on the hi fi amp to the sub. I don't have one of these, so i'm going from the tape out of the pre-amp to the line level input of the sub. Is this ok?

Many thanks.

Regardless I would report it back to your supplier. Ask for another new one. Either that or some money off

Me too: if it was a hard enough knock to chip the enclosure, there's always the possibility of damage to the electronics within. I'd get it swapped out...

And no, the tape out won't do, as it's fixed level, and so the sub level won't change in tandem with that of your main speakers

First, get in contact with the retailer and get a new Sub.

Secondly shouldn't the Rel come with the Neutrik cable, someone else may have to answer that.

Finally if you are not going to use the Speaker level connection, you connect the Pre-Out to the Sub, not the Line-Out from your Preamplifier. If the Preamp has 2 pairs of pre-outs fine, else you'll need a pair of RCA splitters (Audioquest make sone) or y-cables.

My REL sub didn't come with a high level cable and I can't see why they would as standard.

The REL Strata II was updated many moons ago, so although you say its 'new' do you mean new for you but in fact second-hand?

That would explain the lack of this cable which was definitely a standard enclosed accessory.

Sorry, if I confused anyone. The Rel is new to me, but is a second-hand unit off flea-bay. Everything seems to be in good working order, so I'll not bother with the faff of trying to apportion blame to either the courier or seller. The sub's out of view and the sound is the priority. Which is very good, by the way.

Thank you for the advice on the tape out. You're quite right. I calibrated the sub to what is my usual listening volume and it sounded great. This morning, though, when I turned the volume down to Sunday morning -keep-the-neighbours-happy-volume, the sub stayed at the same volume and was overpowering.

So, do these Neutrik cables only come as connectors, that you have to then attach to a cable yourself? So far, on my internet search, that is all I have found. Can you get prefab cables?

Hi bretty.

I have a Strata II which I bought new.

I therefore have all the documents/manual and original leads including the speakon-amp high level connector (several metres in length I think).

I had previously bought and sold a REL Q100 sub which I outfitted with a Russ Andrews custom made speakon terminated cable. I retained this for use on my new Strata and therefore have not touched the original one shipped with the unit.

Are you interested?

Thank you for the offer, Shreddy, but i've ordered one from flea-bay.

HI Shreddy,

I've got a Rel Stampede I bought second hand which I was given a dirt cheap lead to connect with. I would therefore be interested in that cable you've got, is it good quality? How did it compare to the RA lead? I just had a look on their website and was a bit shocked by the price of their Rel sub leads!!
