Humming sub

Hi folks,

I recently replaced my 2 metre Ixos sub cable with a 1 meter Chord Crimson hoping to get better results but the result is instead an annoying humming coming from the sub (Tannoy EFX 5.1). It is worst when the amp (AVR1906) is off, but still bad when the amp is on with or without output (though less noticable with output obviously).

Now there was always a noise with the Ixos cable but not enough to distract and only with the amp off which I presume is normal. Have checked that the cable is connected up right and all the sub settings are the same as they were. I'm guessing it must be the cable but how?

Would be great if anyone could shed some light on what might be the problem.

Thanks

Do you have a component such as a Skybox or Freeview box also plugged in to your AV amp and does your rooftop aerial plug into one of these components?

The cable is faulty. I have had this problem before it is faulty earth sreening or earth in extension power lead.

i had this when i moved flats. my kef sub has an option for ground in/out. try flipping that if you have it. solved my problem.

Thanks for the response guys. I only have PS3 and bluray connected to amp using optical cable. I don't have ground in/out option unfortunately. Even when I unplug the cable at the amp end the noise is there, and when it's plugged in if I touch the metal casing at either end of the cable the humming changes just like if you touched the end when it was unplugged. I'm sure now it must be a dodgy cable. I've plugged the Ixos back in and its fine. Think I'll send the Chord back.
