am i right in remembering that its hand tight via screwdriver then back a quarter turn or is this more a manufacturer specific thing? has anyone experienced any loosening on oldish speakers?

Hand tight using screwdriver or suitable Allen/Torx key. Use the right size tool, be careful of slipping and damaging driver, and don't force things, as you can easily strip threads or, on some inexpensive speakers, strip the part of the MDF into which the screw bites.

That sounds painfully close to: tighten until it strips, then back off a quarter turn! Andrew's advice is best, I'm sure.

To answer your point about loosening in older speakers, the answer is yes. I've just done mine for the first time, after about 14 years (though they were done once by the shop, I think). Not sure how easy these new-fangled speakers are where the fastenings are hidden, but I guess you prise off something first.
