How important is high dynamic range on new TVs?

Just received my latest copy of HCC and in there they review the new Samsung TV, it has high dynamic range and it's saying it's very good. What are your thought on it? Would you buy a new TV without it on? I saw the new Samsung in Currys and it was impressive - colours looked great!

Which specific new Samsung TV, gel? Yes, I know which one, but not everyone gets Home Cinema Choice on subscription so they won't know which particular television you mean. Sometimes your thoughts run ahead of your typing fingers! *smile*

Samsung ue65js9500, and its saying HDR range is potentially bigger than 4K. May 2015 edition.

Gets 5 stars for performance and overall and it's praising HDR range a lot! HCC is Home Cinema Choice magazine.

HDR is one of the features of 4K standards and in my view, will be more effective than 4K resolution. That's why I recommend waiting for 2015 TVs for HDR feature if you want to buy a 4K TV.

Unless I am mistaken, the problem with HDR is there is not (yet) an agreed industry standard for it. So despite plenty of announcements about HDR at CES in January, the situation is still a little confused with each TV manufacturer having their own take on the technology.

I think you're right.

Cheers guys, looks like I will be waiting until next year to potentially upgrade to a 65-inch OLED 4K HDR range TV. I have read reports the new LG OLED 4K one might have a firmware update to HDR but I wouldn't like to take that risk. HCC are raving about it!

I can't see how a firmware update can enable HDR! I thought it was hardware related.

I don't know but that's the rumour on the AV thread and I have seen it mentioned as well but HCC certainly didn't see sure about this either today in the mag. So perhaps you're right. Makes the purchase of the new LG 4K OLED at £3800 seem even more crazy.

You're getting confused. The TV itself cannot be made HDR by a firmware update as mentioned in the first link.

The second link talks of a firmware update to the HDMI connection itself (not the TV) so it can detect HDR streams (not necessarily display the full capability of HDR). Copy pasting from the second link:

"The HMDI 2.0a upgrade is necessary because current ultra high-definition (UHD) televisions are unable detect the HDR metadata flags embedded in HDR-treated video streams and display them properly."

Oops! I am not too sure I get all that. *smile* Ah I got it.
