How good is the IMac cd/dvd lens and laser for Hi-fi music?

Hello All,

I´m wondering how good is the CD/DVD laser and lens built-in into an IMac G5.

Is it comparable with a Marantz cd 6004 cd player ?

If not ( as I guess ), what are the main differences to evaluate the loss of quality using the IMac ?

Im not sure the quality of the laser is that important, its mostly to do with the quality of the DAC, the transport and its ability isolate electrical interferance. Most people seem to output via the imacs optical or USB to a DAC, bypassing the computers DAC.

So, which solution do you suggest for better Hi-fi results?

1) Cd player Marantz cd 6004 + amplifier Yahama natural sound 592 + Technics loudspeakers

2) Imac G5 + Motu 828 MKII + Active speakers ( Genelec type )

I'll let someone more knowledgeable than myself answer that one, but I would be inclined to go the iMac route, mayby even put an Airport Express in vetween the Mac and the DAC.
