How do you check a new speaker product?

A friend of mine has worked out a neat design of speaker, and is in the process of building prototypes. His arguments for it seem sound, but apart from knowing when something sounds nasty, I'm no expert. What's the best way to get an expert opinion on how good something in the speaker world actually is?
