Home cinema upgrade questions

Hello all,

I was wondering if I could ask some advice about setting up
a cinema room. I bought the kit a number of years ago and I wondered what I can
still use. My current set-up is:

Sony amp: STR-DB930

B&W 603 S2 front speakers

B&W CC6 centre speaker

Yamaha NS-E105 rear
speakers

I am thinking about adding either Optoma HD33 or HD23
projector

My questions:

I need to buy a new amplifier for the HDMI connection to the
projector but I could do with an amp that is quite small in size to fit on a
shelf – do they exist?

Should I upgrade the rear speakers?

OR would it be a good idea to replace for an all in one
system, rather that buying a new amp. Maybe something like Sony BDVN590?

Thanks for your time!!

Your setup is similar in some regards to mine (B&W fronts/center, logitech rears) but you dont mention a subwoofer...

I have read lots of very positive comments about the Sony and even though I haven't heard it myself I still can't help feeling that it would be a significant downgrade.

On the amp side, there are slimline amps available from Marantz and Pioneer but these amps compromise on features (most notably raw power) in order to squeeze into their small frames. I would only buy one of these amps if I had no alternative - stay full size if you can, the results will be be far superior. :rockout:

You’ve confirmed what I thought and THANKS for the reply!

I think my solution will be to take up some of the floorboards and feed through lots of cable so I can keep the big amp. In our previous house there was no need for a subwoofer but I think I will look into one for this set-up.

I better start saving 🙂

Not necessarily, that amp has 5.1 analogue inputs, so you could just get a blu-ray player with full analogue outputs, send those to the amp and take the hdmi to the projector. I'm doing something similar with exactly the same amp and my Pioneer KRP-500A, works perfectly well, although you won't get 7.1 of course if that matters.

I'm not sure I have space for a 7.1 set-up, so that might be a good plan.. Thanks for your help!
