I was looking at buying a new music hifi but then had the idea of having just one 'entertainment' centre that will play anything. I am looking at buying a Panasonic Home Cinema Blue-Ray SC-BT205 that will play any disc and has large floor standing speakers. All the reviews I have read only review it as a Home Cinema system and not for quality of music CD reproduction. Anyone any views on this?

Not going to help you much. I too am looking at the same issue. I looked at the BT205 but wasnt impressed when I put my ipod on it so I bought a Panasonic bluray BD60 leaving me to look at an amp Plus speakers sepeately.

I posted someting under "pioneer vsx 919 and jamo 102" earlier this week and have had a few responses which i am looking into. I tried the pioneer with a set of Jamo S 606 at comet and it was very impressive and clear for music - but the speakers were huge and the package cost inxs of £1k. I wanted to keep it below £600.

I am now looking at Denon, Onkyo, Q Acoustics; Tannoy etc etc. It's a bewildering choice. Good luck. I am still looking!

The Panasonic home cinema system is primarily designed for movies. The music CD reproduction will not be a match for dedicated hi-fi systems. But it will still sound decent. My previous system was a Panasonic Home cinema DVD system which was good with CD music. Yours won't be any different to it.

Dedicated hi-fi systems are not good for home cinema either, & for your budget, I can't recommend anything better than the system you have chosen.

I agree with big boss. Stereo amplifiers are much better than av amplifiers when it comes to music. I think the general rule of thumb is that you will need to spend at least 50% of what you spent on your AV amp to replicate the quality of your AV amp.

I used to have a £250 stereo amp and a £400 AV amp. The stereo amp was miles better at music.

If you want a separates system, you can consider:

Receiver: Sony STR-DH800. This won't upscale DVDs, but your TV will do that just as well.

Blu-ray player: There are many players available for less than £150. The Sony S360 is available for £128 with 3 free blu-ray discs on Amazon. You can get a Samsung 1600 with a Harry Potter blu-ray disc for £89.99 from the hut outlet on Ebay (check my post in 'hot deals' section)

Speakers: Look at the Jamo A102 speaker package. If you're after floor standers, it may be worth checking out Teufel speaker systems. They have a very large collection of home cinema speaker systems to suit every budget. This is an example: http://www.teufel.eu/Homecinema/Concept-P.cfm

All the best!

Bearing in mind the What HiFi review of the Jamo speaker package, you would be better pairing them with the Yamaha 465 or 565 or the Denon 1610 which are similarly priced to the Sony H800. Alternatively, the Tanoy SFX 5.1 pack would pair well with the Sony H800 and is slightly cheaper than the Jamos.
