I have noticed that my hobbies have run full circle over the last 30 years and wondered whether this is simply an age thing. By hobbies i refer to what i spent most spare time and money on (after allowing for family, house, holidays). Predominantly speaking and starting at age 13 and my first part time job here are the main interests i had.

13-17 Music (buying vinyl)
18-25 Pubs / Socialising (mainly beer based)
26-30 Playing Golf (membership and social)
31-38 Computer Games (offline then online based)
39-40 TV / Films / DVD
41-43 Hi-Fi / CD's / Music

In helping to remember i found a good guide to this was what main magazine i was subscribed to or purchased regularly.

Indeed - fantastic hobby (not a sport for me really, I think you need to be good for it to become a sport

Looks like you've got 7 years of going down the pub coming up.

Which in turn will bring the Golf back up as you move towards retirement.

Golf isn't a hobby or a sport! It's something footballer's do to "appear cool" in their spare time and the preserve of the elderly..And for what it's worth i'm good ,apparently......according to my best mate....(golf pro at prestigious course),But personally i would rather pull my finger nails out with pliers than play golf!

Guess that makes me either a footballer or elderly.

Ok,probably not a fair representation of gollfer's, but from what i've seen at my mate's course...they're either silver haired or dress as humbug's for a living!

nads:
not a circle here just lines.

some just started earlier or later.

Same here. Stuff I've taken up over the years will still just tick away in the background until the conditions to do them again arise (Tennis in summer, etc.)

The core things of music, drumming, cars, films have been with me since I was a kid/teen and continue to do so.

I know people who have fads and phases. My Father-In-Law is one, golf for a couple of years then forgotten as if it never happened. Crazy....If you enjoy it, DO IT!!

For a larger majority of men in particular, hobbies are cyclical. I am definately so, mountain biking instead of golf....along with rock climbing, hiking etc.

For anything to be a sport, you have to sweat.... If you sweat when playing ball and stick, then you are over weight (like most golfers) and unfit.

Golf is a game, and a bad one at that. It is never a sport and will never will be.

When colin moobs montomery, john daley and the like play the game, it can not be called a sport!

Personally, I'd equate a sport with skill. It takes an awful lot of talent and skill to hit a ball with a stick 500+ yards and get it in a tiny hole in 3-4 shots I can tell you. If you don't believe me, try it some time!

As to most golfers being overweight, I guess it's been a while since you actually watched golf?! Seriously, very few overweight people will want to walk the 5-6km you have to get round an 18 and professionals (as in virtually all sports nowadays) have to be athletes. Look at the top golfers now, they keep themselves damn fit - if they don't, they won't stay at the top for long. I'm not saying you need to be an athlete to play, but let's just keep it realistic.

The objective of golf is to make the little white ball move before the huge green one. The huge green one is mother earth. Those who can do this, well they just do it . Those who cant, well as is more often the case have a good old rant about it !!!.

Yes its only a game, but jeez it must be the most difficult one out there. It can never be mastered because *golf is not a game of perfect *

* quote mr bob rotela. Mind games guru to most of the overweight multi - millionaires who play golf on tour.
