High Sensitivity Speakers

Hello,

ideas & recommendations sought for a pair of bookshelf/standmounter high, 90(ish) DB speakers.

To be used with a Bantum USB amp/dac.

Sorry, should have given more detail. l want something that is dynamic, forward, bright (without being harsh) something that's "alive" Do not want anything that's laid back/warm.

Don't mind second hand

Mission 751. A bigger bookshelf speaker, but not massive. About 17 years old now, but great design, 751 Freedom model came out up until the mid-90s. Either would fit the bill, though the earlier model is closed to your needs (I owned a pair and can't recommend them highly enough).

The caveat is to try and hear them with your partnering kit, but based on your post, they'd be a good fit. Warm they are not, but you'll get a confident, forward and musical picture that is on the brighter side of neutral. Not shrill, just a very good little speaker. Expect to pay around £100.

Sounds interesting. l always liked the sound of Mission speakers, though have never heard the 751's.

After a bit of digging around, found that they are 89dB, just what l'm looking for.

However, the recommended amp is given as 20 - 75 watts per channel. As the Bantum USB only musters 15, do you feel this would be a problem?

Any other candidates?

I would recommend Wharfedale E series, but I've never heard of your amp and source.

However, the Wharfedales are suitable for amps from 5 - 65 watts, and they are 96db.

Have a look for Triangle speakers (bookshelf models Titus, Comete, Trio, Duetto). Lively and dynamic sound, high sensitivity.

According to the Batam FAQ page, they recommend speakers above 86dB so the Missions would be fine.

They also say that their amp can match those from other manufacturers with ratings of 100W because the Bantam has very low distortion and is designed to provide a good quality sound all the way to it's max output.

Yes, the low distortion was one of the things that attracted me to the Bantam.

At present, l'm using it with a pair of Tannoy F1 Customs (87dB) & though the sound is OK, l feel it lacks a little sparkle; hence looking for something a little more dynamic.

Q Acoustics 1050i are rated 92db / 6ohm. Plus the company was formed by ex Mission staff.

92dB would be ideal however, the Q Acoustic 1050i's are floorstanders. Small(ish) bookshelf/standmounter needed.

How about some Monitor Audio RS1's ? They should provide the dynamism and sparkle that you think are missing. Sevenoaks have got some on offer at £200 and £249 on their website.
