We're in the market to buy a new Hi-Fi system and we want to go all singing, all dancing (and we're prepared to spend). However, neither myself or hubby are particularly technically minded. We want something that sounds good but also looks the business too. Does anyone have any recommendations on what and where to buy!? Thanks!

What do you want it to do - just play CDs, store and stream music, deliver surround sound, and so on - ?

How big is the room in which it'll be used?

Do you want something compact or are you prepared to have a stack of boxes?

The more info you can give us the better an answer we can deliver...

True, but if it's style you want, head down to the B&O shop. They'll be able to help you out.

For separates I'd go for Sonus Faber speakers with Copland amp and CD player unless you prefer a more rugged, this is about the business look, in which case Electrocompaniet, the ECI series, springs to mind.

Hi, Yep, pretty much as you've said really - play music, deliver a great sound etc - just the normal stuff. It will sit in the living room / dinding room which is about 20foot by 10foot. I'd rather something compact but really whatever looks best...

I know that B&O products look great but i've heard their not really great in terms of sound!?

Thanks

They're actually very good indeed in terms of sound, no worries there.

It'd be handy to know MrsG what your budget is; whether it's just for music (ie amp, cd player & speakers) or whether you want surround sound for movies as well.

Also, what music do you generally listen to?

Something compact but which does good sound, yet looks the part too? How about this little two box set - Harman Kardon's MAS110 - usually around £750 or so, but Superfi have it for £499.

It has a USB connection, various analogue and digital input options, DAB and FM radio, a 65wpc amp (which is pretty decent) and will do a decent job. Good functionality all round really.

Not sure how it would sound in a larger room, but if it didn't suit and you'd bought online, Superfi are pretty good for returns, pretty much no quibble as long as you've looked after the item and it goes back within 7 days (check the Distance Selling Regulations on the government website).

Nice looking little system, good build, and could be the dark horse if it appeals!

EDIT: Here's a link to some info on it from Superfi:-

I did buy the MAS110. ...Stylish and elegant this system definitely is, an integrated ipod player this system definitely is NOT.

Unlike any other system on the market, once the ipod is docked, all functionality is lost via the ipod, and supposedly transferred to the remote control. This however, is where it all falls apart. The remote has no 'scan' or 'go to' functionality, ..the basic functionality required for operating and listening to an ipod. To clarify, this means that assuming your 160gb ipod contains 160gb of music, and you wanted to listen to 'The Zepher song', you'd need to press the '>' button 160,000 times, or if you wanted to listen to albums by 'The Weepies', not only would the moment have passed, but you'd have cramp in your thumb too!

Basically, you are pretty much restricted to listening to tracks, artists or albums beginning with 'A', or alternatively using the 'Random' button and letting the system choose for you. I assumed that this was as a result of a fault with either the ipod dock or the remote, ..I even read the instruction manual! ..however HK have eventually confirmed that this is infact a design feature, and that the MAS110 is designed predominantly for the charging of your ipod and listening to random tracks only.

If as it would seem, Harman Kardon have not yet developed the technology to provide ipod functionality via their system, then like every other ipod dock on the market, including their own 'play and go' system, control of the ipod needs to remain with the ipod. ...simples!

The MAS110 is essentially a very beautiful, decent sounding, extremely expensive DAB radio (assuming you can get a signal!). If Harman Kardon have got anything to do with it, Abba will soon be experiencing a very successful revival, ..however The Zutons are stuffed!

Hi there im looking to buy my first sound system and will probably go ahead and get the B&W 685's as i have heard great reviews. I listen to all music especially dance like techno and drum and bass so Im wondering if these speakers would produce a good quality. Also Is it wise to just get a quality amp and cabling and then play through my laptop as i spend alot of time buying mp3's instead of cd's? Iis the sound quality then lessened alot? I would then purchase a cd player when I have the money but for now I want to focus on buying a quality amp for them and i have a good budget for it but need advice on which one especially if im connecting to my laptop... any advice would be great, Thanks

The B&Ws will be overkill if you just intend to run MP3s into your amp. To make the most of speakers like that you should invest in Lossless files and a DAC which plugs into your amp. It will sound 100% better.

mrs G please let us know your budget, music taste and prefered source, cd, computer vinyl etc

thanks we wil only be happy to give our advise

I second the Bang & Olufsen suggestions.

If you can afford it (I wish I could!) then get it. It sounds great and is superbly engineered and finished and will last forever and after-sales support is peerless.

Robg1976,

Mrs G hasn't been seen around these parts since 22 June 2010.

I suspect she has purchased whatever she was looking for and is enjoying it.
