Having thought I had finally found my perfect TV in the form of the Sony KDL 40W4500 (LCD) I have now just seen a plasma Panasonic TH42PZ85B, and was frankly blown away.

Any views? Help needed, I cannot decide

Thanks

Trust your eyes and buy the best tv you see. The threads on here re: poor W4500 build quality would also raise doubts in my mind.

Does your viewing distance mean you need 1080p HD or do you just want it ?

I think im right in saying that in general plasma's are more lightly to be nearer there final calibrated settings from the get go than lcd. So sometimes i think it is hard to compare different tv's in most shops unless you get hold of the remote yourself and play with the settings.

Most people say the w4500 build quality is pretty good dont they, well compared to other lcd's at least.

I'd read this first before saying that. I'm not saying anyone should panic but I would insist on an in store check on the TV I was buying.

Thanks for the quick responses. !080p is a definate requirement as will be watching blu-ray via PS3.

Have seen both in the shops and had a good tinkle with the remotes, again I am at a loss.

Have been following the threads on the 46W4500 reference the clouding of certain batches of screeens. Thing is when I wnet shopping initially I had thought LCD, dont know why, maybe because I have an old one and pretty much discounted plasma due to and please dont laugh the re-gassing issues / lifespan of the tv. Based upon overall picture quality the pros and cons of the two pretty much balance themselves out and the cost is comparable. Just now comes down to reliabilty?? any views??

Will be feeding my TV from a Yamaha DSP863SE HDMI. KEF 2005.3 speakers

V+ connected to reciever via componant and optical

DVD (soon to be Sony Blu Ray BDP350) to reciever.

Read all of this on the Panny and the test on this site for the Sony to help.

I thought you meant build quality as in the structure, casing e.t.c of the tv.

I'd include screen functionality into the build quality ..... but then I'm picky

I have the 42PZ85 and it's an excellent tv. Excellent motion handiling (as long as you turn off the IFC feature in the menu), really natural colours, excellent black level detail, even the sound is good by flatscreen standards especially if you use the BBE VIVA 3D fake surround setting. Nice remote and even the tv stand swivels on it's base which is handy for plugging in all your cables.

SD from a bog standard SKY box is pretty impressive for a full hd tv, upscaled dvd's through a PS3 look amazing and blu-ray's take your breath away. I was completely blown away the 1st time I watched a blu-ray, really detailed and the picture looks 3d.

It's an excellent tv if you like games, really fast response time so games like Burnout or GT5 in 1080P look really impressive.

It does take a bit of tweaking to look it's best, but 10 mins with the THX optimizer works wonders.

I havn't seen the Sony to compare to mine, but I love my tv.

Well, unless you game for several weeks at a time, with the same static screen for all those weeks, then it doesn't matter which kind of TV you get. If you do game that long then (a) a plasma isn't right for you and (b) you are probably dead from lack of water / sleep / food.
BTW - to the OP, regassing is a plasma myth - you don't have to regas the TV at all. Ever.
