help in setting up playstation 3?

just bought playstation 3 today i have a pioneer xde436 43 inch plasma pioneer vsxd2011 thx amp,i have used my hdmi lead to tv, and optical cable from amp to playstation picture but no sound tried changing dvd/audio output to bitstream and linear pcm, set optical output to linear pcm can anyone tell me where i am going wrong, oh no hdmi connection on my amp.

Have you set the PS3 to output sound via the optical cable and not the HDMI?

Select Linear PCM for BD Audio Output (Optical) which is in your Playstation's BD/DVD settings menu.

soughted it out thanks now got sound now outputing 5.1 digital sound but curious why no speakers eg 5.1 showing on amp display but checked playstation audio display saying its outputting 5.1 to amp is that the way it works, amp just displaying digital, usualy the speakers also show on display sound is coming from all speakers.
