I need to connect a blu ray player to an AV amplifier using the multichannel analogue connections. I have a 5.1 set up and am wondering if I need to connect all 7 normal channels or just the 5? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Do you have the speakers and amp yet?

5.1 refers to 5 channels and a subwoofer (a subwoofer is 0.1 as not considered a "whole channel" as such) - 7.1 simply adds two extra effects speakers to the side.

More and more soundtracks are coming out with 7.1 but most are 5.1 and this is sufficient for most people. As Ronald suggested, you could go 5.1 now and just add the 2 extra speakers later.

I think your AV amp and/or bluray player will have a set up menu whereby you specify if you are using 5, 6 or 7 speakers (+ sub).

Thanks to all for the useful advice. I've had the main system for a while and am setting up the new blu ray player this weekend. As I am using an older amplifier I plan to make use of the HD decoding in the blu ray and output via the multi channel analogue outputs to the amp. The 5.1 speaker set up is already in place, so I have just been wondering why connect 7.1 between Blu ray and amp, when the amp is only sending out 5.1 to the speakers. I would have to buy another set of interconnects for those other 2 channels (between blu ray and amp), which would seem a waste if they aren't going to do anything!

Correct, it depends where the decoding is taking place - in this case if the blu ray is doing the decoding and outputting 5.1 for all soundtracks, you don't need to connect the extra 2 channels - just means you'll need an extra set of interconnects when you upgrade to 7.1!
