Headphone output of Panasonic TVs

Just got a TX-L32E6B, which is very nice, but exhibits an oddity. The only analogue output available is a headphone socket (which is to be expected), but when using it the TV speakers themselves do not mute, and the headphone volume does not track the TV volume - it is managed by a separate volume control deep in the menus. Does anybody know whether it's possible to configure it so that it does mute and has a variable output controlled by the TV volume? I want to avoid hooking the TV up to the stereo via a digital output if at all possible.

This may not help whatsoever (bearing in mind your comment about the TV's digital output), but I used to use the RCA output from my Panny plasma into my Cambridge amp and used the headphone socket on the amp. Considering the budget gear used, the sound was excellent. The DAC in the TV itself was actually pretty decent - which I can't say I expected.

Yes indeedy. My Tivo's remote can be programmed to control the Panasonic's volume, so had hoped that normal TV watching could be done a via a variable analogue out with just the one remote (ie not using the amp's), but it would appear that I am SOL...

In a similar situation, I bought one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/One-For-All-Control-Universal/dp/B0030GDLYS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397320517&sr=8-1&keywords=All+in+one+remote

Very easy watch tv or watch film combinations.

So what is hogging the optical input on your Stream Magic 6 ? The 751BD?

If so, there are alternatives ...

(1) Your 751BD has analogue stereo RCAs for connecting to the 651A amp thus freeing up the optical input on the Stream Magic 6 for sound from the TV. (Possibility of 'lag' between picture and sound when playing BDs / DVDs.)

(2) The 751BD also has co-ax digital to connect to the Stream Magic 6. (Frees up optical for TV.)

(3) The one I use - optical from the TV to the Stream Magic 6 and HDMI from the 751BD to the TV. (No chance of any 'lag' between picture and sound when playing BDs / DVDs.)

The obvious thing to do would be to take the optical out from the TV into the StreamMagic and then use the apps available for TV, TiVo and StreamMagic to control everything (for they are all quite effective), but I had hoped that simple TV viewing could be kept thus - simple - by using only the Virgin remote. I don't mind the 'faff' of input configuration but this is not a universally held view chez Duncan.

OK so I have taken the digital out from the Panasonic to the StreamMagic and have set up a separate folder on both my phone and my Nexus for the three apps required to control the setup: StreamMAgic, Virgin Tivo, Panasonic Remote. So I can control channel change, source selection, volume from one device, no line of sight required.

It's slightly fiddly to do the initial setup when wishing to listen via hifi but it also means that we can use TV sound or sound through the stereo, thus giving rather more flexibility than previously. It would also mean I could put the TiVo box in the cupboard if I so wished, which may elicit strong approval from Mrs JD...
