HDMI HD Camcorder problem connection

Hi, I've just joined the forum.

My problem is this; my Sony HDR TG1 HD camcorder records rather spiffing video. When I connect it direct to my TV with an HDMI cable it looks great. When I connect it with the AV cable (with white yellow red on one end) there is quite a lot of definition lost. My DVD recorder doesn't have HDMI in. It does have white yellow red inputs, and also DV in. But the camcorder doesn't have DV connection ability.

As I want to record to DVD straight from the Sony, can anyone tell me a way round it in order to get the HD quality that's on the Sony onto a disc? I have gone as far as looking in several shops for a DVD recorder with HDMI in but have not found one so far.

The guy on the Sony helpline was no use!!!

You're right, it would be pointless to record your HD video via the Composite cable (the lowest of the low!). Is there any reason why you do not want to transfer the video onto a PC and then burn it to disc? Is suspect a DVD recorder that accepts HDMI in is going to be expensive (and unlikely as the point of HDMI is to enable copy protection).

Hmmm

Well I've copied video files to my PC from my normal SD camera but they take an eternity to transcode and burn to disc. I got round that problem by simply connecting said camera to DVD recorder. It's a doddle. I quite reasonably assumed that using the PC for HD video burning would shorten my lifespan considerably!! Hence my wanting to use the same tactic. The Sony manual actually states that using the composite cable would result in output being SD.

What therefore is the point of an HD camcorder?!?!?

As far as I know, the only way to get hi-def video from these camcorders is via the PC / Mac - I think it's pretty much the standard way of doing it.

Composite will give you an SD image because it can't handle the HD signals I'm afraid.
