I have a Digital ready Phillips TV with HDMI connectivity and I want to get an audio output to my pre-HMDI AV Amp (Yamaha DSP E-800) to listen to TV through my AV sert up

I can't even connect the TV to the Amp with an analogue phono connection as there aren't any phono outputs on the TV. Can I somehow convert HDMI to either digital coaxial (electrical) or optical?

Any help greatly appreciated 🙂

What's the model of the TV? In virtually all instances I'm aware of, the HDMI port on a TV is an input, not an output so even if a cable did exist to take HDMI to digital coaxial / optical, I don't think it would work.

As far as i'm aware any HDMI television will use HDMI input its much harder to get a HDMI out. You have a Yamaha amp which should let you connect a HDMI cable straight from it to the television. Important thing to note is if you have a HDMI 1.3 compliant HDMI socket on both the amp and the tele then there is no need for optical or coaxial lead as they don't have the bandwidth to deliver high definition sound so its easier to stick with a HDMI cable. If you have got your speakers connected to your amp and have a HDMI 1.3 cable from your output socket on your Yamaha amp straight to the input HDMI on your tele you should be sorted after that. Hope this helps

Its a Phillips 32PFL7762D.

Any ideas how I would get either analogue or digital o/p into my Amp if the HDMI is input only?

My Yamaha Amp is pre-HDMI it only has either analogue RCA phono, Optical digital or Coax (electrical) digital inputs.

I am surprised that I can't get an output from the TV that can feed into my Amp??

I used to be OK when I had a sky box as this had an o/p but now I use only the freeview reciever in the TV. Unless I am watching a DVD I can't get sound through my AV system now 🙁

Yup, a quick look at the manual confirms there's no audio output except for the headphones. So the only way you can do it is to get a 3.5mm to RCA phono cable and connect from the headphone socket into your amp. It's not ideal, but it will at least work.

Thanks for that.

I also thought of using the spare scart and get a scart to RCA converter into a phono. Again not ideal as it's not a digital o/p but at least analogue is better than nothing.

Thanks for your help

This is something being tackled in the latest iteration of HDMI, which we're not allowed to call v1.4 any more. It has a feature called Audio Return Channel, which would do just what you want it to, although of course it would require both the TV and the system to be Audio Return compatible, which your current components aren't.

One day...

Again, your issue there is the Scart sockets are inputs, not outputs, so they won't be transmitting sound from the TV's built-in Freeview tuner. I'm afraid your only choices are headphone socket or get an external Freeview box which has the correct audio outputs to connect into your amp. You could always get a Freeview HDD recorder / PVR which would allow you to record stuff off the TV as well if that interests you.

Surely the 21 pin scart connector would have an audio L & R output, this is how the DVD recorder gets its signal after all as DVD recorder does not have built in reciever?

Hmmmm, you might possibly have a point there. My gut feeling is it won't work as the TV won't be outputting the sound from the Freeview tuner via the Scart, but I have no certain knowledge of that and could well be wrong. If you can source the cables, it could be worth a go - much better than the headphone output that's for sure!

Do such components exist or are we waiting for things to catch up?

Ah yes, but there are in/out Scart sockets, and in-only Scart sockets, and not all Scart cables are fully wired.

You need to look at the little symbols next to the Scarts: if there's a TV screen shaped pictogram with an arrow going into it, the socket is input-only; one with an arrow with a head at each end indicates an in/out, and one with the arrow pointing out of the 'TV screen' is an output only.
