I've just bought a mini windows pc as a xbmc media player. It only has hdmi out as a digital signal so i thought about an extractor such as this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cablesson-HDelity-HDMI-Audio-Extractor/dp/B009D70JIY/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1438010683&sr=1-8&keywords=hdmi+audio+extractor

Does anyone here have any experiance with these gadgets? What's the sound quality like with either optical or coaxial? My mini pc is this one here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/JUSTOP-Windows-Fanless-Bluetooth-Streaming/dp/B00ZFQQIK0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1438010969&sr=1-1&keywords=justop+mini+pc

Thanks in advance.

Just out of interest, why not use usb out through a cheap but good dac/soundcard such as the £25 Behringer UCA202?

To be honest Dave i've never been all that convinced by usb audio. All the dac's i've tried in the past have had a certain grainy and sharp sound. Granted this was a few years ago when usb was in it's infancy for audio perhaps things have improved?

Besides all my usb's are taken up with other devices ( 3 separate hard drives, wireless keyboard & mouse)

Modern USB dacs are fine, even the budget models like the Behringer. I have used a few of these so I know they work well

No experience of the HDMI extractor, but it should work fine, given the current state of the art there is no excuse for poor sound. It's cheap enough, buy one from Amazon and send it back if it sounds carp.
