So, popped into my local hifi store wanting to purchase 5meters of phono leads, unfortinatly they didnt actualy have any in stock, but was told they could make one up for me, they gave me a cost (£66) and I agreed - Seemed fair.

So, I get home, and have a look at the cable, jump online to compair costs with what Iv just bought....So.....

Online costs as follows....
10 meters total of QED QXDAV1-FLX - online is £ £3pm - £30 total

8 Nuetrik plugs - online cost £1 each - £8 total

So, if I bought this online the cost would have been £38 + postage....I paid £66 in the highstreet.

Anyone think I made a mistake?

You do the math. But then again, they haven't ripped you off. They haven't lied or anything.

But they "made" the thing for you! Yes you could buy the componants of t'internet and then make then yourself when they eventually arrive.

TBH I think you had fantastic service.

The below is intended as no personal dig but:

Why do people go into shops get all the advice and experience then say "I could find it cheaper on the internet" -grrrrr

Mushroomgod,

You should have checked what they cost online first, then gone to the shop to perhaps try and negotiate a better price.

Regardless, you must expect to pay more at a 'bricks and mortar' store as oppossed to an online store, for simple reasons.

The premium you paid is for the fact that the cables were made to your request on the spot, and they were available immediately.

If I know exactly what I want then I buy over the internet at the best price I can from a reliable supplier.

If I need advice, or I need to demo things, I'll go in person to a shop where I know I'll get good advice, and I'll buy from them. I know it will cost more, but I have had more service, and I have more support if there are problems. Sure, I see the items I have just bought cheaper elsewhere or on line, but what I won't do is take the shop's advice and then buy at the cheapest outlet; that just isn't fair, and if everyone did that there would be no real shops left and no good advice.

So don't worry about it.

Hi, I dont think you made a mistake.......If you have the feeling that the shop had added their value to your purchase....then it's ok to pay more for the added value........PRICE IS WHAT YOU PAY......VALUE IS WHAT YOU GET.....:)

you may think so at the moment but think of this, i bet if you go back to them in the future they will remember you and give you good service. if you have a fault with the cable im sure they will replace it.... you won't get that service online im sure worth a thought.

Could be worse; you paid roughly £26 for someone to go away, cut up the cable, connect to the plugs and you get to avoid all the hassle, save half an hour of your time, plug in and go when you get back. Not too bad and like I say, could've been worse. Could've been Nordost for example (in which case, multiply by ten)!

I take it the shop made the cables for you, if so how long did that take? You paid £26 extra for someone to complete a task correctly that may have taken you an hour or more to complete, that is presuming you had the tool to complete the task .

Another website that offers termination charges £67.60 for your configuration so your local specialist has provided a same day service cheaper.

I don't think you have been ripped off at all, I think you have benefited from an additional item - service - and don't see the value in that.

And £50 is far from an unreasonable labour charge these days, as anyone who's had their car serviced at a main dealer lately will tell you...

Cars and labour charges are a sore point with me.

This is the problem with buying over the net: they're more online dealer than you can shake a stick at, therefore, with some, the assumption is prices will be like-for-like...

£50/hr is more like an independant, most main dealers charge between £70 - £130+ an hour especially if you own something with a German label on it.

I once got a 20? pair of phono leads (0.5m). Cost of cable & plugs was 8? and the cost of connections 4 times 3? = 12? for connecting / soldering the cable to the plugs. Supposedly the soldering was made with liquid silver or some sort... Could probably be expensive material.
