Assuming you plan to split your budget roughly 50:50, our current favourite amps are the Cyrus 6vs2 (£600) and Roksan Kandy MK L.III (£650). That leaves you around £400 for speakers. We'd suggest Monitor Audio's Bronze BR5 (£400) or Acoustic Energy's Neo Three (£370) if you want floorstanders, or the Epos M12.2 (£450) if you prefer standmounters. Don't forget the new issue of the Ultimate Guide to Hi-Fi will be on sale from June 21, packed with 350 five- and four-star products and recommended systems.

Then again you could be a bit more adventurous and consider the likes of the Cambridge Audio 540A or one of the NAD models, which would leave you a lot more money for some speakers. It rather depends on whether you want small standmounters or some larger floortsanding speakers, and indeed what CD player or whatever you're using as the source. More information please...

Lots of questions to ask to offer a good recommendation - size of room, type of music you enjoy most, aesthetic restrictions (if any - i.e. must match all the other wood furnishings), and what source will you be listening to?

All other things being equal with most equipment nowadays we tend to recommend budgeting a little in favour of the speakers - so in this case around £300/£700 or £400/600 amp to speakers, but specific recommendation will depend on the above
