Having just read a comment about how people can see/hear differently to other people heres a very good audio test to test peoples hearing and compare to others that have taken the test ~

http://tonometric.com/adaptivepitch/

another 3 tests can be found at the homepage ~

Be interesting to see what results we get

Here is the test I took and failed to spot the difference;

http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/03/mp3-sound-quality-test-128-320/

I got this Wrong! D'oh.

When you say I got it wrong, did you hear a difference but got it the wrong way round or did you guess wrong? I didn't click to find out as it would have been a guess. I don't want to fool myself into thinking I might be able to tell the difference if I was right and I don't want to slip into dispondency if I get it wrong.

Listened to it on my headphones and couldn't detect any difference at all!

Both sounded excellent to my ears.

I heard no difference to be honest and guessed wrongly. I may have thought I had heard a difference if I had got it right!

Woohoo! Second attempt (without telly on in background and going through DAC & hifi instead of laptop speaker) I got 1.95 hz.

Third attempt (and last) I got 3.5 hz in the adaptive pitch test.

Hmmmm. I will stop now.

[Edit] Took the Rhythm test. 68 %.

So Alien (or is it Rik?) what was your score? You want to test us, presumably you took it yourself?

I did a test like this once before on this forum. I performed dreadfully and by rights shouldn't be able to hear the difference between my Spendors and a pair of Akai walkman speakers. I can still clearly hear the difference a Chord SilverScreen makes though

aliEn aliEnRIK or Rik is all fine by me

I find the test easier going through my PS3 (to be able to get it through my hifi)

Im not that good but I was in the top 25% for the adaptive pitch test. I was in the top 15% for Rhythm

ahah for the compression test i got it right, but may have been a guess, i THINK i heard a difference in the drum sound at the end and symbol sounds, however i did in the back of my mind know which the 320kbps track was because it took about 2 seconds longer to load...

however, this short clip has fairly little going on in it, and sounds very well produced, therefore i guess it doesnt suffer anywhere near as badly from compression as some music does... i reckon most of us could tell the difference given the full song assuming some parts have more going on in it that the clip we were given

Still, I appear to be the rhythm champion so far. I must be a thick drummer. Ug.

How many are going to own up to taking the Noise addicts bit rate test? I think the two go hand in hand. A check on how good your hearing is and then see if there is any correlation between that and being able to differentiate bit rates. Then we can find out how true the idea of golden ears is. If we can then establish golden ears then we have some evidence towards showing why some can detect differences in cables and some cannot.

I just took it. I passed. I played each clip 3 times - alternating them - to be sure, and selected the correct one. The 320k clip was definitely 'snappier' and the 128k smoother and more laid back. (Tried last night but their site was slow and would not come up with the play clip icons. )

Just done it again but it was the same clips and the same answer. (They should have different clips and randomise the order of different bit rates so 1 or 2 are never always the same.)

Played through a decent system - and switching quickly like this - the difference is pretty obvious. I heard the same sort of difference when upgrading my old 128k AAC downloads to 256k AAC+ on iTunes earlier this year.

I got the bit rate test wrong. I went for [EDITED BY MODS for spoiler reasons], as the vocal seemed less grainy, more smooth and therefore had the better bit rate. Shows what I know.

Gonna try the other tests now...

Bretty ,I was trying not to reveal the number of the best quality clip so that others can still take the test without pre-conceptions. Could you possibly amend your post?

Oops, sorry peeps. the mods have sorted my mistake. Wasn't thinking, having a bad day....

0.675Hz in adaptive pitch

84% in rhythm

94.4% in tonedeaf.

Now for that pesky bit rate test...
