Hi there,

I wonder if there is someone who can help me with the following problem.

I have a Panasonic Viera plasma TV with built in Freeview connected to an Onkyo TX-SR 406 (with 5.1 Q-Acoustic speakers) and a newly acquired Panasonic BS 850 Freesat blu ray player/recorder.

My problem is this; is it possible to record some of the Freeview channels (which are missing on Freesat) onto the BS850?

At the moment I have an elderly media computer(pre HDMI) also connected to the system which has a similar spec to the BS850 i.e.2 tuners, which I am using at present to record Freeview channels but obviously not at the same quality, although it is much more user friendly than the BS850!

Ideally I would like to remove the computer from the system and just have the BS 850 for all recording, particularly if the excellent series Breaking Bad returns on the USA channel.

Thank you for viewing this post and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bill ps stay warm!

Hi Bill

Im sorry to say but the answer is NO in regards to recording Freeview on the DMR-BS850, it was strictly engineered as a Freesat recorder only, if it had a scart input then you could of recorded Freeview from the tv's own tuner but i think thats why they did not include it.

For the odd channels that are not on Freesat and are only on Freeview, you can only do what your doing and record on the media centre or buy a seperate Freeview recorder. I dont know if this will help but we have heard Panasonic will be launching some Freeview HD recorders this year, maybe if its cheap enough, you can add one to your setup.

Hi Folks,

Thank you for the reply and advice, which was useful and confirmed what I was thinking.

Incidently the BS 850 is an excellent piece of kit, if a little complicated for an Old fella, but I am not surprised as all my panasonic equipment is first class( her indoors has a 37 Viera and my former BD 35 Blu-ray player)

Thanks again

Bill

Hi There

The above answer is wrong i have the the BS 750 same as yours bar mine has a 250gig hard drive and yours has a 500gig hard drive

you will find two scart sockets on the back if you plug a scart lead into AV 1 on recorder and AV 1 on tv and turn on viera link on both

recorder and tv (The manual for recorder tells you how to do this) You can direct record from tv's freeview tuner press input select on recorder remote and select AV1 or press direct tv record button, Downside to this is you can only record what you are watching on tv and you can't watch a blu-ray or anything of the hard drive at the same time.

Second and much better option is to buy a cheap £20 or so freeview box and plug scart lead from freeview box tv out scart to recorder AV2 input make sure freeview is set to RGB output and recorder set to RGB/video input on AV2 settings for best picture quality then you can record any freeview channel you want (press input select on recorder remote and select AV2 to view and record from freeview box) This second option allows you to watch a blu-ray or program you've recorded from hard drive while recording from freeview box.Downside to this option is another box under the tv plus outlay.

Hope this helps

Regards Phill
