Hi Neal

Don't know of one with a card slot for Setanta, but we've just tested the Goodmans GHD8020F2 at £129 with Freeview and 80GB hard disk which is good value.

This Sagem looks a good deal at Argos.

We haven't tested it (and weren't overly impressed with the ITD64 and ITD72), sadly, so I can't comment on its likely performance. But then Argos does offer money-back guarantee, I guess....

Also worth noting the new Humax TVs come with a built-in PVR that's upgradeable, too.

Sure we'll be testing plenty more shortly.

This is madness.

My 50inch Samsung has a shocking freeview tuner and I'd be highly tempted to get an off-board unit. All the brands you mention are from the bargain basement brand bucket. What on earth is going on? There must be a market leader in PVR / Freeview boxes. Don't tell me that Sagem and Argos have become brand and retailer of choice.

So here's the question. Who makes the best one. At ANY price. There must be a market leader. It's not as though the price of even the most expensive will break the bank, so we can toss cost issues out of the window. It's a straight shoot-em-out. Who wins?

It seems the big brands are concentrating on building digital tuners into their TVs and DVD recorders, instead of standalone units. And there have been some excellent examples (Sony, Philips and Panasonic spring immediately to mind).

Sadly, it also seems public perception is that Freeview is free, and therefore not worth paying a premium for - hence the market being dominated by the budget brands.

But budget isn't necessarily bad - both Sagem and Humax have some gems in their range, as does Goodmans. And the TVonics boxes are decent, too: if you shop wisely - by individual box, not necessarily brand - you can still pick up an excellent Freeview add-on.

There are plenty out there but not with the card slot for setanta sport it seams.I to am not concerned about the money but it seams if you want setanta sport you have to get the budget one with no hdd.
Also i cant find an Argos with one in stock.

It's a revolution ;-)

Ok, so for the best picture on my Samsung, (the inbuilt tuner is actually very good but suffers lip-sync difficulties and terrible channel changing delays) which of your suggestions would you buy? I'm really not bothered what it costs. I want a good picture and sound. Ability to record. Fast channel switching.

Go on Clare, make my day and tell me which one to buy! :)

For you Will..... reckon the five-star Sagem we review on p10 of the current (September) issue is your best bet. That's the DVR-64250T, priced £170.
