Freesat and all that!

My freeview box was one the models made redundant by a recent upgrade of the local transmitter. It happens, too, that my faithful CRT is on its last legs... so I have decisions to make about 'how to proceed'... and (considering many things) Freesat seems a sensible way forward. A tv I'm considering is one of the new Panasonics which happen to have an integral Freesat tuner... but what other kit would I need to make (possibly HD) recordings?? Any help would be most gratefully received. If I tell you my first experience of home tv was a b+w monster with a mirror in the lid that turned the bbc-only picture through 90 degrees, you might guess I'm pretty ancient.. and have difficulty sometimes keeping up with 'all the changes' !

You need a PVR but I understand that a Freeview one won't work.

I don't know of a standalone PVR for Freesat although there probably are some.

Alternative is to buy a non integrated TV and the new Humax Freesat+ PVR box when released in November (combined HD Freesat receiver and PVR). It costs £299 though:

That said a non integrated tv may be cheaper anyway so swings and roundabouts.

It's true I'm afraid. A number of boxes, including mine, which could even be purchased just over a year ago, didn't have the capacity to cope with the increasing amount of info about channels etc... so basically gave up trying! No problems aerial/signal-wise. The box reports new channels found... does a scan (as per normal) and then reports it can't find them!!! It's a 'recognised' fact... found out about it after searching forums. Started a few years ago and has continued as each transmitter was 'up-graded' . My problem now is finding a new freeview box that DOESN'T have a bad write up for one reason or another. Even the models with a 5* review seem to have probs. That's why I was thinking freesat... but I've gone off that idea for the mo.

Thanks for comments 'Alsone'. Thinking freesat isn't the way to go... just yet... so for the time being I'm trying to track down a quality, reliable, user friendly, replacement freeview box, but that's not easy it seems! (Not quite ready for a noisy PVR!)
