Does anyone out there know who will make the new free sat boxes, has anyone on the mag seen a prototype or got a firm date when they will become available. Personally I cant wait for free hd programming. What are your feelings clare ?

Sorry, I'm not Clare (!), but I think Freesat HD is a great idea, and now that we're due to get 4 HD channels on Freeview, as we reported here yesterday, the future of HDTV is looking good.
Don't have a firm date yet for the launch of Freesat boxes I'm afraid, but Clare has already reported on the fact that Panasonic will launch a couple of Freesat plasma TVs this summer.
And the latest news is that the Freesat service may launch in the first week of May - follow this thread for more info.

I read about freesat in the Daily Telegraph on 2nd May. Their web site tells you next to nothing. Why was What Hi-Fi not up to date on the matter? I subscribe to Sky HD and thought I was prepared to receive all future HD transmissions. Now, it looks like I will have to buy yet another blooming box. I bought a Sky box, then a Sky plus box and then a Sky HD box. If I have to buy another box Sky will get the boot. HELP!

As Andrew points out, we were one of the first sites to report on the launch date for Freesat, even before it was officially acknowledged by the company's own PR team. And the WHF?SV magazine team has already conducted in-depth interviews with the BBC and Freesat head honchos, which will appear in our Freesat feature in the July issue. So no, we haven't been slacking!

The Daily Telegraph obviously did such a great job with its feature that it's scared you into thinking you need a new box. Relax - you don't. There are hours and hours more high-def content on Sky HD than Freesat, which at launch only has BBC HD - also on Sky HD.

The Daily Telegraph obviously did such a great job with its feature that it's scared you into thinking you need a new box. Relax - you don't. There are hours and hours more high-def content on Sky HD than Freesat, which at launch only has BBC HD - also on Sky HD.

I would think that the Freesat box will filter out all the scrambled channels I don't think Sky HD box can do that.
