Fosi Merak CD Player Review

A slightly bizarre conclusion from him, as usually he’s excellent at summarising. His own table clearly shows it’s well below his own benchmark for max DAC resolution, placing 11th. But obviously for the money it’s a bargain indeed and another triumph for Fosi!
Then you didn't understand. He's saying it makes an excellent *transport* using the digital output.

In typical ASR fashion, it's as clear as mud.

I can never forget one review Amir's test results showed a product had shockingly low scores across the board. When it came to the summary & recommendation he said despite it's poor performance, it sounded excellent, so he had no choice but to recommend. Reading 10 the pages of replies, not one person highlighted how this review discredited the whole approach to judgment by measurement only.

Two things popped into my head. The first was wondering how often that happens, and if the outcome is wilfully ignored or explained away?

The second thought was like the lightning bolt that hit me when I was about 50% through The Game by Neil Strauss... (I wouldn't recommend anyone losing hours of their life by reading it.) When you're 100 pages into reading about this group of men who are able to manipulate women & it all feeling a icky, you find out that the end goal of these pickup artists at the time was to get a phone number. That's it. Hold the ******* phone, a whole process of lies & psychological tricks by these men, venerated in some circles as literal Gods, were only trying to get women's phone numbers. WTF, you've got to be kidding me?

Hopefully that reflection has given you a good idea of the level of dumbfounded, face-palming incredulity that hit me. Well, when something clicked in my little brain and I suddenly thought 'hold on, does no-one listen to the products they review on ASR?' Mind blown. Like, really, really blown. Years after reading that ASR review, I'm still somewhat dumfounded that quite literally what all these devices are for; listening, isn't part of their testing.

p.s. hopefully I'm not totally wrong about this. But... there's a strong possibility my ASR related anecdote is in fact merely the culmination of my poor memory & somewhat anti-ASR bias. More than happy to be told I'm wrong here. And if you're still reading, I feel I should probably also apologise for making you read this needlessly verbose, largely irrelevant and potentially even factually incorrect rant about a community of people who share the same hobby as me.

Great read, it was a lovely journey. 🙂
I think, subjective listening is kind of taboo with ASR.

I truly believe if they got perfect measurements from the exhaust of a dirty Ford diesel, they'll proclaim this to be the ideal sound quality.

Only possible with something that's cheap - he'd never do that for something higher end that cost more money.

Please confirm that you paid full retail price from your own pocket for this piece of equipment.
No sorry as I stated in the text Fosi supplied the unit to me free of charge and I wanted to be clear about that. But that didn't change my review of it, I shared it here because I thought people might want to know about it. I wasn't aware of the sensitivity people have to Fosi mea culpa.

Thanks for being straight with us - I'm afraid that means the review can't be reinstated, though I am not doubting your honesty. Few people who've posted these reviews fess up when asked the question.

The funny thing is that I don't even need it, it's back in the box sitting on a shelf. I was asked to do the review and thought it would be fun.... once again lesson learned.🙁
It's the way Fosi works to get free advertising.
Mine would be straight on eBay.
Which is why the probably haven't sent anything to me.....
Out of curiosity how did they pick you?
I'm sure they don't do it out of the blue.

I thought about ebay, I used to sell a lot of stuff there but I gave up because the experience is so bad.

I'm not sure how they found me, they sent an email saying would I like to review one of their products so I said yes.

Now YBA have just issued one that I would be interested in.
A portable SACD / DAC / headphone amp...... Nice!
Really nice, love the minimalist look, you'll probably need a solid 5v usb linear power supply to get the very best performance.

Nope. Just plug it into the mains.
It is French but hopefully should work well with a decent UK supply.... ;-)
Not to sure where linear power supply enters into it as it also battery powered, please exp as I have no idea why you think that might be a requirement.

That's cool, obviously got that wrong.

I was looking at the photo and I thought, if it didn't come with it's own DC IN supply, you may need to purchase an external linear (or a switch) AC/DC 5v supply like below or you can power it up from your laptop via 5v USB connection.

Really handy it allows you to switch to battery when you're moving around. Nice machine.

It's the only one of it's kind that has gone on my potential shopping list...
Not as a portable but as a replacement for my Oppo.
I can forgive it's inability to handle Bluray audio discs as I don't own many.
