i'm looking to buy new speakers and amp or receiver for around 2k. could somebody offer me something? it will be used to listen rock/metal music from cd player and/or laptop. friends told me to buy 8 ohms speakers, are they better than 4/6 ohms? what's the difference? btw, i'll buy online at audioaffair, if u can offer me something from this website.

thanks in advance :)

I recently heard an all Rega set up chez un ami - Riga Brio R, Rega DAC, Rega Apollo R CD and RS5 speakers - which you might be able to do on a £2k budget? (definitely if you have CD already)

This set up was awesome for metal - really handled the low down grunt of down tuned guitars and the whack of double bass drumming beautifully.

Come to think of it I think you can buy the RS5s in silly colours (lime green, orange - that kind of thing) for about £300-400 less than their tasteful wooden counterparts, in which case you could do the whole thing in budget.

But you would have lime green or orange speakers!

Welcome...

Do you prefer a receiver or an integrated amp? Does it have to be Audio Affair?

If you're going for integrated/separates from that dealer then Creek Evo and Epos M16i or Focal 716V is hard to beat at the price.

If you're anywhere near Waterford you're welcome to come and have a listen to my AVI ADM9Ts, they're not floorstanders but they're very good, and a pair of the new and upgraded models plus subwoofer would give you a big, high quality sound. That would cost you £2050 and can be ordered direct from AVI's online shop, they have built in amplification, DAC and preamp too, so ideal for computer based music, though you can't buy a matching centre speaker for them.

If I am unable to do a demo and totally new, then I would generally go with a package deal the dealer generally offers. For example an Onkyo Receiver with Tannoy Speakers etc. You might be getting a better deal and most probably the dealer (based on his experience) would not match the system in a wrong way as synergy is more important than the individual components.

Receivers - I like the Onkyo 709 and Marantz SR 6006. They are pretty much at the mid level and offer the best bang for money. Also, they are either neutral or a little bit warmer side of neutral. I would say they generally match with the likes Tannoy Revolution, Boston A360 or Epos Epic and these all are very musical and good sounding spekers given thier price range, IMO.
