After years of buying CD's got myself a second hand LP12 - 1970's on Ebay. After a couple of years got a second hand Michell Orbe SE which transfomed vinyl listening for me. Last year bought my first new deck a SME model 10 and up-graded to the tome-arm V. The model 10 comes with a VDH tonearm cable. Have just put a order in the a Chord Sarum tone-arm cable , Chord have kindly offered to burn it in fully as it takes 100 hours. If anyone is intrested will post my findings after a good listen back to back with the VDH when deliverd ( few weeks I understand )What got you into vinyl and aslo what are your long term goals , are you happy as you are or will you up-grade in the future.

Welcome to the Forum.

I imagine there will be a number of [envious?] people, keen to hear about your turntable discoveries. I won't be one of them as I can't stand the surface noise of vinyl, however well it might be minimised by decent gear.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Can I have your old Orbe now you no longer need it? [cue angelic Oliver Twist type look]

In my case, I'm old enough that vinyl was the only format for music lovers (early 80s) - cassettes were rubbish and CDs weren't really on the market and when they did come in they were twice the price of LPs in any case. How things have changed! I just loved listening to records, and particularly discovering and tracking down new music – John Peel was a major source of new music for me. Still discovering new stuff, although more slowly now, and still frequently get bored of what I know and really want to discover something new which excites me. That shiver down your spine – priceless.

Just to let everybody know that you regard yourself as superior to people whio enjoy collecting records which enables you to look down on us as we struggle to hear our music beneath all that crackle and pop? You're delusional...oh and Edited by mods. See house rules. That's just an audaciously inappropriate welcome to somebody posting for the first time and keen to share his enthusiasm. Mind you, it's to be expected: I read your put-down of chebby which was both rude and personal. Edited.

There is also a digital streamer within my system to be honest I very rarely download these day’s and mostly use it to make playlists when company is in the house. So why not down load to the streamer you may ask ? Yes vinyl sounds better so let me explain how to eradicate surface noise.

1/ Use a record cleaning machine such as Okki Nokki – granted everyone might not want to spend money on a washing machine for records. If you serious about your collection it’s a great investment.

2/ An Anti-Static brush – use this every time you put a record on.

3/ Needle cleaner – use regularly

Does all that sound like hard work ? Suppose you will burn around 5 calories doing the above. The rewards are high and quiet.

Lastly an old git like me can actually read the sleeve notes and admire great art work all 12 inches of it. No one will convince you to drop digital over vinyl that’s fine. You should however let vinyl enthusiasts get on with it.

Hello and welcome. I've got a few turntables including an LP12, which is slightly modded from original 80's spec but not much ie new power supply and base-board and probably one or two other things that I can't remember. I like the way it sounds and life's too short and complex to give it much thought really. So, in answer to your question, I guess I'm saying that I'm pretty settled on what I have re that deck. Some of the other decks could do with some sort of transformation though.

As for goals, well, I try not to have any; I've already put through my own net enough times.

I'd be interested to hear the comparison when it's completed, although if it's too technical I fear I will be lost after the first paragraph. Concentrate on how it sounds compared, say, to an LP 12, and I'll be with you.

You may be better off posting your findings in a new thread on the Hifi forums: they like that kind of thing.

All the best.

Sorry, Captain Sensible, if you presumed that my ill-tempered rant was aimed at you; it wasn't, of course, because you seem like a jolly good egg. It was aimed at another poster who announced himself by what he presumably thought was a withering attack on the vinyl format and that, because we're all timid, old-fashioned, leather-paches and pipe and slippers types who don't like to cause a fuss, we'd all read and digest. It's a tuntable and lps forum, for God's sake. D'oh.

How nice of you to say so Jim.

You obviously missed the " I imagine there will be a number of [envious?] people, keen to hear about your turntable discoveries". Just as I missed that it was in the turntable section and no-one had said hello to him in two and a half hours.

If people are happy to listen to vinyl and get as much satisfaction as I do with digital, then that's brilliant. It wasn't a put down but I'm sure you know best.

Any way I'm so hurt by your rapier wit that I'll have to lay down now and sob myself to sleep.

ps. You're no relation to Jim Anchor are you?

*fool*

To Captain Sensible. Absolutely no offence meant. As I've said, your post was looking lonely so I thought I'd get the ball rolling for your welcome. Did all the things, on a tangential T/T, to minimise noise but I just have a complete aversion to it, hell I hate it when artists introduce it artificially within digital. Enjoy your new cable when you eventually get it.

Well, I took (envious?) to be sarcastic; it certainly looks that way to me or why would you use the question mark?

'I'm so hurt by your rapier wit that I'll have to lay down and sob myself to sleep.' confirms your modus operandi as sarcastic and childish. That is when you're not simply being rude and offensive as you were inthe Hifi forums, calling 'chebby' 'small minded', 'sad' and letting him know you felt sorry for him. Then you went searching for a comment 'lindsayt' made in another forum and posted it in an attempt to nail him because he too was offended by your tone and attitude.

'I can't stand the surface noise of vinyl.' I take it you mean the odd record that may have a bit of surface noise...why generalise unless, of course, you're trying to discredit the whole medium?

Thus, I hope you'll understand why I haven't really taken to you, old boy.

Edit: Oh I forgot 'Jim Anchor'...talk about knife-box. Ouch.

This is why I keep a very low profile...

Welcome aboard Capt'

I actually missed this post and have already enchanged pleasantries with the good Captain elsewhere.

I was already jealous of his super duper remastered copy of 'So', as for the hardware! *bad*

Well, it's nearly bonfire night, so why not? Consider me a naughty child with a few bangers that I stuck in somebody's letter-box. Ha! Those were the days; a damn sight more exciting than tonearms, cables and VTA.

You're a decent guy anyway, lion; I've always thought so.

It's the array of vibrant, colourful characters as well as the endless information one can soak up from the obvious experience of other members that keeps me coming back to this forum more and more. Particularly the turntable and LP section, forI love being in a minority group! ;-)

Yes, those of us who lived through the LP era understand what a joy CDs are. It seems ridiculous to want to return to that primitive era. Good riddance to LPs. I'll never listen to LPs again.

I had to laugh this morning on seeing that something I had posted yesterday had been edited. I must remember to avoid industrial language in this predominantly male environment; I would imagine that's the reason there are so few women inhabiting these forums. I mean, you'd think they'd flock to listen to egotistical anoraks going on about the minutiae of hifi equpment.

Morning, I'm a digital guy however i do like reading about your turtable experiences and am a little jealous of all the wonderful looking kit.

I recently bought a Sugden A21SE from Inspire HiFi and these guys make, modify turntables in Chesterfield. They also look stunning especially the Monarch and are said to sound very very good. I just wondered what you thought of them?

If i had the patience and money i would certainly investigate. I'm affraid my NAD turntable with a flat arm back in the 90's was my only turntable and i dont think that counts! Edit, And Welcome.

musically at the very beginning of the CD era, loved CD. I have since fully embraced the digital era, I enjoy my bit perfect streaming, but am fully enjoying the vinyl experience. It gives me something cd or streaming never could, takes me back to my childhood, rekindles long forgotten memories, gives me a warm fuzzy feeling! ;-) I really don't get why all the vinyl haters feel so threatened, unless you just get off on engaging in a bit of early morning sh*t stirring. Whatever floats your boat I suppose... ;-)

Oh you know...just defending all you gentle and passive vinyl-lovers from attack....even if the attack was rather veiled. The digital streamers shall not pass.

I love the fact that it is almost ritualiistic in nature, that it isn't instantly available at a click of a button or swipe of a screen. I am a man with zero patience normally, demanding it here and right now, yet I love the fact I can't have it like that with my records. I love the tease, the longing, the eager anticipation and finally the reward and gratification experienced on hearing that first pop or perhaps even a stunningly clean and full sound after lovingly man handling and cleansing that piece of floppy polymer. It's a love affair made in heaven! ;-)
