This is my favorite album by her

SSS1%20Milan%20300.png

http://www.soundliaison.com/

and here is a bit from a review written by Rad Bennett from Sound Stage

Carmen Gomes has won many awards in the Netherlands and surrounding areas. Like so many new European singers, she sings in English -- excellent English, I might add. She's formed a group called Carmen Gomes Inc., with Folker Tettero on guitar, Peter Bjørnild on double bass, and Marcel van Engelen on drums. Her style is bluesy and intimate with a sexy voice that's sweet as dark tupelo honey, and her interpretations are unerring. The musicians play to her and to each other, and the ensemble is so tight that the four musicians breathe and move as one.

There are some standards on the set that knocked me over with their fresh approach. Any singer can misplace a few accents and rhythms and come up with something that's original, but perhaps also uneasy and a little strange. Not Gomes, who has taken the songs to their bones and then restructured them to suit her style. Thus "Fever" doesn't sound like a cover of Peggy Lee; it sounds like a brand new take on a familiar song. You emerge from hearing it not thinking it's better or lesser than Lee's version, but that it's a valid new interpretation that could have come first.

The same approach works on "Angel Eyes," "You Don't Know What Love Is," and "I'm on Fire." Most of the rest, including the title song, "Oblivion," "Time Will Tell," "Gasoa Blue," and "The Sea," are Gomes originals that fit right in with the standards. The recording achieves exactly what Bjørnild set out as his goal. It can provide the best seat in your listening room. Go to the Sound Liaison site, listen to a few samples, download an album, and see if you don't agree that this intimate effort is one of the best and best-sounding jazz vocal albums to come along in many a day. By the way, the small audience applauds enthusiastically enough after the last chords of a song die away, but the attendees never interrupt or make themselves known while a song is going on. No doubt they were completely mesmerized into silence, as was I.

Be sure to listen to: On "Dock of the Bay," Gomes creates a languid, bluesy version that is a little bit reminiscent of Bobbie Gentry while still coming across as quite original. It'll cast a spell over you.

Hi,

My favourite has to be Melody Gardot, have got "My one and only Thrill" and "Worrisome Heart" absolutely beautiful.

I also recently came across Tessa Souter albums on my wish list "Beyond the Blue" and "Obsession"

When it comes to male Jazz artists, I really like Michael Franks- "Dragonfly Summer" is superb.

Dee Dee Bridgewater. Saw her 20 or so years ago and bought the album "Keeping Tradition" She's still touring I believe.

There's Diana Krall as well of course. I first heard of her in a HiFi equipment review and bought "Live in Paris".

and this is my favorite album

gregory-porter-water300.jpg

and here is a review from the BBC

[qoute]This auspicious debut, which showcases a well-drilled acoustic band whose horn section features veteran alto saxophonist James Spaulding, harks right back to the heyday of a Brown Jr or a lesser-known singer such as Bill Henderson insofar as the artist’s voice is deployed with the kind of stealth as well as power that imbues the set with a measured, graceful lyricism, no more so than on a crystalline reading of the Carmichael/Mercer standard, Sklylark. The way that Porter, a New York-based Californian who has spent long years in musical theatre, discreetly stretches out languorous notes in the coda, letting them flicker over a slowly ebbing piano, is quite masterful, nailing the essentially wistful nature of the piece without overloading the emotion.[qoute]

The album Baduizm by Erykah Badu falls into this category even though it spans across other musical genres. A very talented singer with deep roots in jazz but with a very contemporary edge. I can't recommend it enough.

Melody Gardot first 2 albums are very good, don't like her last one (the absense).

But I would go for Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue, very well recorded.

Another vote for Diana Krall - but probably not best to start with her most recent, Glad Rag Doll (good, but patchier than most of previous).

Also another vote Melody Gardot - took me a while, but I have seen the light...

And Cassanda Wilson's version of "Shelter from the Storm' is one of my favourite Dylan covers.

More? I'd add Stacey Kent to that list, too, and Madeleine Peyroux.

All superb recordings - many available high-res.

To be honest there are loads of female "jazz" singers around, most very well recorded, you can add Norah Jones, Jane Monheit, and Holly Cole to the list.

Another I have only just discovered is Sinne Eeg, try her last album The Beauty of Sadness, very well recorded.

Patricia Barber, especially the live Album, Fortnight In France. Magnificent content, performance and recording. First heard her at a demo in the Bristol Hi Fi Show. May have been Eclipse speakers, not certain, but it was her version of 'And the Beat Goes On". It drew me in like a magnet.

Yes good choice, some of her albums I don't like, she has various styles, some very slow. I believe her album Modern Cool is a hifi test fav.

Just can't get into Diana Krall, but love Stacey Kent, Breakfast on the morning tram is an excellent album and a thumbs up for Madeleine Peyroux... she really does sound like Billy Holiday.

Nicolas Bearde .

He is not that well known but he has a delightfully smooth voice , his best Cd in my opinion is " Crossing the line " which is pure magic from start to finish .
