For years I was trying to avoid the beast, well I was a full out rocker you see! (not so much now as I am getting older) I mean what is so wonderful about flat speakers that doesn't have any drivers on show?!

Well I was wrong, I recently listen to a pair of Quad 2805 and my-oh my, they can do rock. The sound stage is quite amazing....front to back, side to side was full with music. The bass didn't go as low as my ART Emotion Signature (not many pair can) but always fast and tuneful. and then... "the voice"! Quad 2805's midrange frequencies is simply delicious, I found myself do the unusual thing like put Michael Blube CD on! (I am not a big fan btw) the song, Home, is one of his better recordings, particularly those with close miking, tends to be a very deep and rich presentation with loads of detail, the result is simply stunning! His voice comes across as incredibly natural without any hint of nasal like some flat panels pair I have heard in the past.

Play some AC/DC's black ice, and the Quad keep timing well enough to get my head nodding while guitar solo roar nicely with plenty of details of fingers movement on the fret board. Switch over to Metallica "Sad but True", the 2805 show a slight weakness for the first time! While it's not fair to compare the Quad to my reference ART, which cost twice as much, the ART simply can slam better. I am not saying that Quad sounded soft or lacking attack but a bit more bite would make it more of a musical event. but then again, I don't think Quad engineers were thinking about Industrial Metal when specsheet was made, after all the very first pair of Quad Electrostatic was born way before Black Sabbath invented metal riff! (Was it 1958 when the first pair of panel were introduced?)

So here we are, the Quad 2805 can do something very well and most things brilliantly. If your music collection is full with Jazz, progressive or Classical then they will really make you happy with details , soundstage and emotion that the very best pair can only match.

Andrew Everard:Indeed. Give or take the odd OCR glitch

You were nok killing us wert you? The Snape Makings!

I hurt the ESL-63's manic times and it was a treefendous experellence! Complete 'wart of sound' anteloping us completely and even seeming to come from behove and above too.

I'd buy ESLs in a thrice given half a change.

(I especially liked the bit about you being "smitten aerodynamically".)

It's very much in beta stage ATM, as it says. And if you're going to be smitten by an intrusive caption, how better then aerodynamically?

Lovely creations. One of my friends listened to the 2805s but in the end went for two pairs of 2905s driven by MF 1kWs.

There is but one very major problem that I can find every time I visit the rogue. All other systems that I then hear for weeks afterwards sound absolute rubbish! My AV does not even get a look in for much longer, till I forget and then he invites me for a drink and another damned listen and the cycle continues...

Thaiman:Nice write up, Who is CP?

It's a nom de plume of OCR Glitch.

Actually, I don't thing the Gramophone thing has done at all badly, given that the project has scanned and delivered over 85 years of magazines. And the people on the Gramo web team are gradually working through all the errors...

If I had the space, the money and the QUAD amplification to match there is absolutely no doubt that I would have a pair of 2805s sitting in my lounge.

My ultimate aim is certainly to have QUAD electronics throughout, although whether I will ever have the space for the great panels is debatable.

Put aside the current conversation about the Quads - all I want to know is if Mr. Everard has started that book or learned the piano yet? Whilst my mother was not as encouraging as yours Mr E. if you have not done these things yet, what hope for the rest of us?

Andrew Everard:Again, the clues are all there to be found - like have you noticed how much of my life I spend here...?

Then that is that..... there is no hope

Yup, I agree with the above, the clue was most definitely in the reference to your mother believing you have a book in you. Which you most probably do, although I'll bet you'd buy your mum the latest incarnation of the Kindle with it pre-loaded to give her a first edition on. Now that would be a sweet son-like thing to do!

Will Harris:the latest incarnation of the Kindle with it pre-loaded

Ugh! Repulsive things!

Will Harris... we must remember that although Mr.E is a technology reporter and very forward looking in many ways he does work for 'GRAMOPHONE' magazine and is a graduate of Cambridge (hence my worry that if he cannot punt out a book and learn piano we are all doomed) so dusty old books will always be alluring for him - as Mr E. himself would say... the clues are there...(is there anyway we can make that sentence more ethereal and mystical in the written form?)
