DVD replay on Blu Ray players

I am thinking about changing my ageing Denon 2800 DVD player for a Blu Ray machine. In its day, I guess around 6 yrs ago? The Denon was an excellent DVD player.

If I buy a Panasonic BD 30 or 50 or a Sony 350 Blu Ray player, is it worth still playing DVDs on the Denon or is the DVD capability of the new crop of cheapish blu ray players better than that of my old Denon?

The DVD reproduction on my BD player is excellent. But remember that it'll be Region Two only. That said, the new Yamaha looks LOVELY....

You can purchase the panasonic machines multi-region for DVD from some retailers. The shops use a remote to modify the region code but it does not work for Bluray discs yet. I think you can also buy online a remote with the hack in it but I have never really trusted this approach and bought mine pre-modified. Don't know how this may affect the warranty though.

I'm going through the exact same dilemma currently. What conclusion did you reach? Are you happy with the outcome now, given a bit of hindsight?

I have a Panasonic BD35 with a MR DVD hack, and it works just fine. I can play my Region 1 DVDs on it. The MR DVD Pannys are widely available, from Richer Sounds and lots of internet retailers.ÿ

You can get BD MR also, but that is a more expensive hardware hack, about £100 extra. Probably not worth it unless you have a specialist interest, ahem, that can't be met by Region B BD discs.ÿ

I upgraded from a Denon DVD 1940 to a Sony BDP S550 Blu-ray, and I was asking exactly the same question regarding the quality of DVD replay before I did so. Happily the Sony is just as good at playing DVDs as my Denon was - in fact the sound is slightly better if anything.
