Current system: TV pioneer pdp 506xde (hd ready plasma), denon 3806 (7.1 av amp), denon 3910 (dvd player), 7.1 speakers from kef iQ range

Cash is considerably more tight than when I put this system together 3 years ago. This time there is a measly £200 - £250 in the pot to fund a new purchase (excluding cables).

So the question is this - do I buy a cheaper blu ray player and keep my denon 3910 (which gives a great picture) or do i sell the 3910 on ebay for £200 (cost £900 origonally) and get a better bluray? I know technology has trickled down, but will my dvds really look as good with upscaling on something like the pioneer 51fd compared to the 3910? like many others i have hunderds of dvds and will not be upgrading them all anytime soon, but i wouldn't even be asking the question if i din't intend to shift toward bluray purchase eventually.

Thanks for any opinions or advice!

Sell your Denon now, and buy the Oppo Bluray player when it arrives shortly.

Will be better than your Denon at upscalling and a superb Bluray spinner!

Think it will be around £500

Sell the Denon. Buy a PS3, play games, watch DVDs and Blurays, have fun. Don't worry i'm not a PS3 fanboy, I have an XBOX elite which is a great upscaler

Why? What's wrong with DVD?

A waste of money in my opinion.

Nothing is wrong with DVD, the new Oppo will upscale DVD and spin bluray better than his Denon and cheapo Bluray.

So why is that a waste of money?

How can getting more from his existing DVD collection and a brand new top quality bluray player be a sideways step?

He says his DVDs look great, why waste money. I have a DVD player that has a stunning picture and I don't really get why it would need to be any better to increase enjoyment

I'd wait for the prices to fall a bit more, next Christmas will be a big (huge) time in trying to attract business back to the market.

You won't get the full benefit of blue ray on your HD ready set but I'd be inclined to say it will probably still look great. I doubt it would make sense to go overboard with regards to price but the Pioneer is lovely and would match. Available for around £300 and a good idea if you ask me. If you find the upscaling compares with the Denon then you can always sell that and put the cash towards a full hd telly as and when you can afford it and if you think you'd really need one.

Hi,

Not sure about the LX51 but on the LX71 (~£525) they will look just as good, maybe even a bit better. You could just keep your DVD player and buy a budget Blu Ray player. Make sure you get something that can decode the new HD audio soundtracks and output them as multichannel LPCM over HDMI (which your amp can handle very nicely) or as multichannel analogue.ÿ
