I have a Sony STRDG820 amp and a Sony BDP Blu Ray Player. Can anyone let me know how I get Dolby TrueHD when using the Blu Ray play? I have the amp connected to the Blu ray by HDMI and optical connections.

Using the optical connection I can receive Dolby Digital 3/2/1 which brilliant, however when I switch to Auto (which switches back to the HDMI connection), it displays PCM 48 and the sound is a lot lower and not a patch on the Dolby Digital via optical connection.

As I understand it, I should receive the best sound through HDMI and I shouldn't need the optical connect for BluRay. I must be doing something wrong, hence can anyone help? I want to get the best possible sound.

thanks

I remember why i did not buy a sony BD player their manuals suck.

But you do not need the optical cable as the HDMI will do everything.

yes some HD sound tracks do need the volume turning up a bit.

It sounds as though your bluray player is set up to decode Dolby TrueHD internally rather than sending the (non-decoded) bitstream to the amp for decoding.

Go into the player's Audio Settings and check the following:

Audio output priority = HDMI

Audio (HDMI) = Auto

BD Audio setting = Direct

Audio ATT = off

Dolby Digital = Dolby Digital

DTS = DTS

48/96 khz pcm = irrelevant if the above chosen

Audio DRC = Wide range

Downmix = Dolby surround

Some of these settings are not relevant if HDMI is selected.

Let us know if this has solved the problem of getting TrueHD on your amp.

Hi, I have the same amp and bluray player and might be able to help.

As shreddy said you have to have the BD Audio setting in the players menu set to Direct, if its set to Mix it will only send LPCM 48 to the amp.

Once you've made the change on the menu you also have to physically unplug the power cord from the back of the player. When you restart it again it resets the settings, and flashes Wait on the display.

I had the same problem but with decoding DTS HD Master Audio on the Bond Quantum of Solace movie. I couldn't figure it out and took the player and amp back to the sony shop where it took three of the shop staff and 2 hours to figure it out. Got there in the end but.

Hope that helps.
