Do you like to know the real specs, or just happy with the sound

I'm interested to see what percentage of people like to know the actual specs of their kit, therefor having a technical interest in their equipment, and what percentage are happy just to listen and enjoy? Anyone?

hmm, if you are talking about kit i already own then yes - but only when it comes to amps and speakers.
not fussed about cd players cause its all a bit technical for me. an amps output at a specified resistance, its distortion etc. are meaningful and useful for me to know.
similarly, i like knowing the sensitivity of my speakers, their frequency response, power handling capability and Ohm rating. for some reason i also like to know how heavy a speaker is (i relate weight to build quality).

on the other hand if you are talking about what we like to see in our hi-fi reviews then do a search on the subject and you should find another thread already listing said opinions.

I'm not going to pretend, I know not what most of the technical stuff means. I can just about understand Ohms and watts and that's about it. I suppose I have a similar relationship with my car, I could really be doing with knowing more about how it works... but I can't be bothered.

after reading his comments in the other post im not surprised by your post andrew. however, i thought i would give him the benefit of the doubt - especially as i have been known to be "agressive" in my postings...

I like to know the tech specs although at the moment i can't say i can fully evaluate them properly. I do want to understand why one piece if kit may sound different to another etc etc so when choosing a component to audtion i can be satisfied i have chosen with some logic behind it. It definitely helps my confidence in a product to have some quantifiable evidence to back up any subjective listening (especially if paying big bucks)....

I do not mean is that what you want in a review. I'm interested in seeing who has a technical interest in hifi, like myself. If you think i'm having a go Andrew, then i'm sorry, i'm not. I'm here to meet like-minded people and discuss hifi.

If you study his/her body of work you may reconsider, and feel I have cut him/her more than enough slack to date.

? sorry andrew i think you misread what i wrote - i said i am not surprised. i also know its againt the rules to question your moderation. all i was stating was that i am giving him/her the benefit of the doubt and at the same time trying to show to certain other members that i can be more tolerant of others ;-)

I am interested in how all things work, from the human body to the cosmos. Hifi, though, is my main passion. I wish i'd never started this conversation! I've had two warnings so far, which i understand, and i'm just trying to start a conversation on something which seems to interest people.

You'll be pleased to hear, Specialist and others, that our new website - due later this month - will feature dedicated tech-spec listings for every product review (1000+ at launch).

Measured or specified? Either way, i think you'll be helping alot of readers make their decisions. Thanks

I'm so sorry - I misunderstood your intentions. But then I'm a mere journalist, and as such apparently don't have a clue.

No I understood what you wrote - I just meant I think he/she has been given more than enough benefit of the doubt so far.

hang on mate i think you are getting ahead of yourself there. you have had two related responses that answer your question. to further my response, the amp and speaker tech specs are interesting to me because you need to know them so you can make a good practical pairing of the two ie. in knowing the output of an amp or the requirements of a speaker then you can eliminate some pairings. however, cd players are (regardless of their tech specs and as far as i know) compatible with all amps (although some may be limited by their connections).
maybe the realtime feedback i get from my amp and speakers is also a source of this interest
i have in their specifications. i know my speakers have a very high senstivity because i dont need to turn my amp past 9 o'clock. i also know they have a good frequency response because i can feel the thump of a kick drum or the rumble of an open b-string on a bass.
hope this helps...

maybe you could tell us why you are particularly interested in the specs of your hi-fi...?

if only your bank balance would get mixed up with Clarkson's hey ;-)
that is, of course, assuming you dont make the same sort of money as he...

I am interested in my amps power rating because in order to accurately reproduce the dynamics of music you need hundreds of watts, even with a high sensitivity loudspeaker. I know my speakers have low sensitivity, if i could afford a 1000W amp i'd love one. But i'll have to do with 220W right now. As for output impedance this is useful for telling you how much control said amp will have over your loudspeakers (damping factor). I also like to know as much as possible about speakers because if you know their frequency response (waterfall plot), then you know what they are accurately replaying and what they aren't. I hate bright speakers, and a waterfall plot can tell you this before you even listen. These are just some of the things i like to know. I'm also interested in toroid rating, smoothing capacitor ratings, everything. I'm a technically minded guy with a degree in physics, i like to learn how everything works - not just hifi. But i also appreciate that most people are happy to just sit back and listen, in many ways this is better than my aproach because i sometimes worry to much about setting things up right and figures that i forget i'm suppoesed to be enjoying the music. My curse i guess

By real specs, how involved do you mean? Most manufacturers basic specs for a product are not accurate, especially speaker sensitivity and wattage output.

Personally I wouldn't buy anything hi-fi without lots of Internet research, so I guess I am a thorough person before parting with my cash. I don't understand all the technical stuff though, just the basics, which I'm happy with.
