I have the 52" version of the Philips, it's an excellent TV, and unlike the Samsung it is 100HZ (you can switch it on/off dependant on preference). It's picture is very sharp, If you decide to go that way I am sure you will be happy.

Demo both, and take a DVD or blu ray that you are used to, something with some nice colours, as well as some nice dark scenes.

Ask the store to ensure that both sets are in the "Cinema or Movie" mode and then compare the two, in particular look at the shadow detail in the dark scenes.

Hope this helps

Hi Bluemonk,

I have had a 42PFL7404 since november and have to admin i am over the moon with it. At £800 for a 42 set i laugh when i think i spent so little. Was really looking forward to seeing this in the last issues of WHSV but it wasn't included in the group test.

Not sure on the 550 but i decided on the 42PFL7404 over the 40inch 650 model ( which i have to admit looked great from the box).

Thing with Philips is :

They take a while to run in.

Settings on the base picture options (standard/ Vivid etc) are so over vivid as this would have put me off purchase if i hadn't purchased Philips before.

( My local Richer Sounds had the premium 42PFL9664 set up so badly on my last visit a £350 LG sat next to it looked 10 times better -what a waste)

HD Natural Motion can cause like a little blur on movement if the source has noise. I have played with this and seen that where there is noise or a little pixelisation in the image the same processing that gives the set its awesome 3D effect can enhance the noise too. So use good input source kit. The movement however is great, both SD and HD are very stable. In a 2 hour movie i may get about 10 seconds total of this blur, bet other sets can produce a fair bit more blur without the increased image performance.

Will bet however that the sound on the Philips is considerably better than the Samsung. Sound is great especially with my Panny BD player set to High Clarity Audio. Better than my old Philips CRT. Speakers are rear facing yet somehow more engaging and soundstage is wide.

If you need any help with setting up on a Philips let me know and i will do my best to help.

Good Luck,

Cookie Monster
