I connect my CD player using analogue outputs for playback, however some people tell me that hooking up digitally is better? But id only use the digital connection for recording etc i have listened to my CDs via both connections (out of curiosity) & i find that analogue is much better, anybody have an opinion to this??

It rather depends on the digital to analogue stages of the CD and the Amp. Personally, I would expect the arcam to have a better stage, designed purely to work with it's own transport, and only for CD whilst the Denon has to cope with everything from PCM CDs to AC3 and DTS...

So you are correct, and your findings are what I would expect (and hope for!)
