I have recently bought myself a Denon DM39 player and am looking for advice on a matching set of bookshelf

speakers and cables, connectors. What would you folks suggest i should be considering?

many thanks...

Welcome to the forum.

Did you actually audition the DM39 before buying? If so what speakers were used there.

If not you will have to go out and audition as much as you can in your price range. Do not worry about interconnects or speaker cables at this price range just buy what you can afford. Research this forum and you will find plenty on cables

Speakers are very 'room specific' and as we know nothing about your room / budget / preference for standmount or floorstanding speakers I cannot point you in any particular direction. Go and listen to as many as you can (ideally but not normally available is the ability to listen to them in your own home). Spend some time here and get them right as speakers can make or break a system even a cheap one.

Hi Badpenny,

Welcome to the forum,

I would suggest something like the Monitor Audio BX1 or BX2. Perhaps the KEF Q100. These are bookshelf type speakers which are easily driven and will match well with this Denon system.

Room size is something to consider however a good quality standmount or bookshelf speaker as they're often called is where to start. This system might struggle to get the best out of a larger floorstanding speaker.

It's good advice to give some different speakers a try and see which suits you best.

No, i didn't have the chance to audition any speakers the unit was bought for me as a present and it was

assumed by the buyer, poor thing, that speakers were built in as with a radio.

thanks for the advice and suggestions...

I'd suggest the little Roth OLi RA1 speakers, which are a bargain at just under £100, and have an excellent sound. For cables I'd buy something simple but effective (ie able to conduct electricity from system to speaker): somwhere like Maplin or a local hi-fi retailer should be able to supply a suitable cable 'off the reel' for around £1-£2 per metre.

I wouldn't bother with speaker plugs: just buy the cables a little too long, make bare wire connections at either end of the cable (ie at the Denon and at the speakers), and if you want to be pernickety about things, cut off the ends of the cable every year or so and strip back to reveal clean metal for the best connection.

The Roth Oli RA1 speakers would be a good shout if your room isn't too big, we've just tested them in the latest issue of the mag and they got five stars. "Versatile, decent looks, dynamic and rhythmic sound... they impress with their compact sound and confident sound quality." Ideal for use with the D-M39.

The Denon is not hard to match doubt you'll need to spend above £100 for a pair of compatible speakers.

Look at speakers with max handling of 75watts into 8ohm or so to get a decent sound.

I would not suggest anything above 100watt handling - it'll drain the Denon.

Positioning of your speakers will be more important than brand with that system.

Check Richer Sound bargain pages -wharfdale diamonds.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, much appreciated. I went with the Roth pair in the end

with a good deal from Richer sounds, matching them via QED cables and Cambridge banana plugs

so hoping for some nice noises when i get around to setting it all up.

Just run a bit of Bernward Koch through my new set up and very pleased with the sound .
