Please could someone tell me what different sound formats the Denon 2500BT Blu-ray player can output via it's HDMI? The thing is, I might buy one quite soon but it might be a little longer until I can afford an amp / receiver and surround speaker setup, so there may be a gap before I buy the surround setup, in which I just have my tv and the Blu-ray player with no amp. So, will the Denon be able to output a sound format that my tv (currently a Panasonic 42PX70 but soon to be upgraded) will be able to accept? What options are there for sound output on the Denon player - is it only high-def bitstream out, or can you set it to output stereo or old-skool Dolby Digital? Will appreciate any help!

save your money and buy it all at the same time, by that time the denon might just have dropped in price yet again. No point in getting it now imo.

Thanks but I am going to buy now, partly because they might be sold out soon and anyway, I want to watch Blu-rays asap! Now could someone please tell me what different sound formats the Denon outputs?

Hi Gansta Hold on ...Check the forum..Patience is a virtue.. Issues yet to be resolved..Regarding the 2500.. You need a

Receiver to access the high quality sounds transport only .Check with the supplier and What Hi Fi reports.. Steve

like i said buy the lot together. you may as well stick to dvd untill you get your receiver. and by that time you will save money and blu rays will be cheaper etc etc etc. They wont sell out either.

I believe the Denon can only bitstream the HD audio formats i.e. to get HD audio, you need an amp that can accept the Dolby TrueHD / DTS HD Master Audio signals via HDMI and decode them onboard.

Thankyou skr1.

Do you mean that if I link up a Denon 2500 BT to a tv's HDMI then the tv will not output any sound?

Professorhat thankyou very much I genuinely appreciate your help. cheers man

Thanks again professorhat - so you're saying the Denon can only send the HD audio formats in the form of bitstream, but what about simple stereo sound, or oldskool Dolby Digital? Can it send these? I mean, it does have the Dolby Digital and DTS logos on the front, unlike DTS Master Audio or Dolby True HD / Digital Plus... Could this mean it can send decoded Dolby Digital and DTS? And coz it can't send decoded DTS Master Audio or Dolby True HD (only undecoded bitstream) that is why is doesn't have the logos for these HD audio formats on the front?

And as for it being a 'transport' - this isn't completely technically literally true is it? If it was just a transport then it would literally be just the disc mechanism and laser - with absolutely no upscaling or processing of any kind whatsoever... is this true?

And could anyone else add anything? Any of the WHF reviewers? If you were feeling particularly helpful you could try that connecting that Denon 2500BT to a tv via HDMI and check if the sound comes out of the tv? And you could add your thoughts... please. Would as always be much appreciated.

It's Saturday, so don't have the equipment to hand.

But if your TV can accept two-channel Linear PCM over HDMI - and this is something you'd have to check in the TV's manual or with the TV manuacturer, then you can select '2ch Downmix LPCM' output from the Denon, and this is what will go over the HDMI.

Or in the standard HDMI Multi (Normal) setting the Denon will output Dolby Digital, DTS or LPCM from those soundtracks over the HDMI - again it depends whether the TV has built-in DD/DTS/LPCM capability.

And a bit less of the 'gansta' attitude, please...
