HD Ready will display 720P or 1080I resolution pictures.
Full HD will display 1080P.

The best sound system to go for is, err, the one that meets your needs. What are they?

Thanks for that

Re sound - have an old style Tv with attached surround speakers , the best thing about my old JVC is the sound which is excellent.

Main usage is sport & movies.

Well, you can use the TVs speakers for the lowest quality sound.

You can attach and hifi amp and speakers for stereo sound (and add a subwoofer for 2.1)

Or you can add a home cinema amp to provide 5.1 surround sound for the most immersive experience.

Ones things for sure in that you definatly won't be calling the sound from any flatpannel TV anything like excellent! But as allready mentioned just how you choose to address the isue with the quite frankly naff sound supplied by modern TVs is entirely down to you.

A simple alternative to going down amps and speakers is something like a sounbar like this one
