DACMagic vs AVR DAC

After reading recent posts I'm going to continue to use my Cyrus 1 and Tannoy 609's for music & movies, however when looking at getting something to help render digital sources to my amp it occurs to me that using the DAC within the likes of Yamaha 765 or 1065 and then using pre-out into Cyrus might be most flexible approach since leaves me the option of surround sound, or 2.1 even, for movies? Am I likely to lose much using Yamaha AVR as DAC rather than dedicated item like DACMagic?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks

I compared the DacMagic to the DAC in my Yamaha AV receiver and it didn't made much difference i must say. I also tried a high end DAC and it sounded a little sweeter but lost low end grunt. So i sold it and i use now my AV receiver's DAC and upstairs my DacMagic. I must say my relatively cheap chinese tubed MHZS cd player sounds best, shame they don't make any DAC's.

I used the onboard DACs on my Denon AVR for music for some time (and often still do for background music, purely for convenience). Was curious about other offerings so tried a Dacmagic and found it more to my tastes: warmer, more lively/exciting. There's less detail and clarity/separation so I'd say it's different as opposed to better - that's all I can offer by way of experience.

I'd love to try a comparison with the CA 840C's DAC as this is rated by some, but Richer sounds were unable to provide an audition last time I was in the UK.

I've the suspician that with a branded DAC you're buying a 'different' sound, so you have to audition to find what you like.
