Connecting an amplified CD/DVD home theater to an HIFI amplifier? Possible? Advisable?

Please forgive my ignorance but I am a newbie to HIFI matters ( lately i tend to start all my posts like this 🙂 )

I have an Onkyo TX-8050 amplifier/receiver and also a relatively old CD/DVD home theather system with its own set of speakers. Given that the CD/DVD home theatre system's is already amplifified (it plays its own set of speakers), can I connect the CD/DVD to my Onkyo Amplifier? would I get the CD's audio played through the Onlyo out to the speakers? Could I damage the Onkyo amplifier?

Sorry again for my high levels of ignorance 🙂

Thanks for your advise?

Yes, it's very likely you could do serious damage, given that the signal levels from the speaker outputs will be much higher than the input for which the amplifier is designed. Unless your exsiting system has a pair of stereo outputs, usually marked 'REC' or 'Tape out', a relatively inexpensive Blu-ray player with stereo analogue outputs would be a better bet (assuming you still want to play DVDs). If not, just add a basic CD player.

If the old home cinema unit has a set of RCA audio output sockets, then yes you can connect it like any other line level source. If it only has speaker outputs DO NOT connect it to your amp, you will cause damage.
