Confused starter needs help!

I know the response I usually get from asking a silly question... but here it goes;

When referring to seperates for Hi-fi use, will a sub pre out be on that of the CD player, or that of the amplifier?

The preamp signal to the sub will come from the amplifier. Not all manufacturers have this option so check the specs before your flex your credit card....

What sivanessen said, but with the additional thought that most Hifi amps don't have a sub pre-out - this is mainly the territory of AV (home cinema) amps...

Though most subs will accept a speaker-level input, and use its own internal crossover.
