Perhaps not entirely the best place for this query (sorry!), but I've had an email from a website saying someone tried to access my account with an incorrect password more than 5 times, and the account was locked. They gave me the IP address of the attemping party (89.111.221.128) and I've tracked it to Boznia (of all places...). Is this some rogue kid trying to log in to a common name on the site in question, or does my computer have a nasty residing within?

Thanks for any assistance/direction.

Well, if there was spyware / key logger on your PC, then they wouldn't have got the password wrong (unless you've changed it very recently) so more likely someone either getting confused or trying some sort of brute force attack on the site - in either case it's failed!

Worth running a scan on your PC though to be sure and contacting the site whose password this belongs to to let them know of the message and that it wasn't you that locked it out.

EDIT - good point from idc there, don't use any links within the email to contact the site - preferably phone them or use an email address available on their (genuine) website!

My advice would be to ignore the e-mail as it could be part of the con, delete everything and them check your firewall etc is working and do a full scan to check for viruses etc.

First, is it a website you use? If it is, like someone else said, contact them and ask if there is a problem with your account, describing what the email says, but visit their website directly, without clicking any links in the actual email.

If they say there is a problem, then scan/clean/wipe your pc, if there isnt, its just a phishing attempt.

thanks all.

It's a rival site to this one, I rarely use it, so will contact them via their own site to confirm it's a genuine email. I'm not logged into it either - I was mostly concerned as our work sophos anti-virus flashed a message about a trojan that was using a random password generator to attempt a brute force attack. Although over the weekend I realised that the trojan notification came through on Thurs, and the other site emailed on Monday, so probably coincidence. My (free) AVG hasn't shown anything untoward.

Cheers
