When i see a computer monitor that says its resolution is 1920 x 1200 does this mean that its picture is better than a plasma/lcd at 1920 x 1080 ?
Would i get the 1080 picture from a blueray player on the computer monitor ?

No ...that just means that the resolution is the same as a TV with full HD capability. The reason why computer screens often feature higher resolutions at smaller screen sizes is simple - you sit a lot closer to the computer screen.

The computer screens are just like TVs - some of them have a great picture, fantastic uniformity and breathtaking contrasts - while an even larger lot just displays pictures in a less spectacular manner. The great performers are often the more expensive ones, while the so called bargain screens might not end up delivering all that you hoped for.

You can play Blu Ray on a monitor, but the monitor has to support HDCP (High Bandwidth Content Protection) to show all the content.

The only thing I do not understand exactly is - why?

A 1920x1200 resolution monitor has a higher resolution than a 'Full HD' TV, but that's not really a good thing if you're using it as a TV! More pixels doesn't mean better picture quality, especially if you have more pixels than you need

As 1080p video is 1920x1080, displaying it on a 1920x1200 screen will either involve black bars top and bottom (if you're lucky) or a stretched image (if you're unlucky). Some monitors do not have an 'aspect' mode or similar (where they show the feed in it's native resolution) so they just stretch the image to fill the screen, distorting it at the same time.

There can be other issues too. Personally I'd always go for a TV over a monitor, unless I only had room for one display in my house! I accept it may be a good idea in a small flat or something, but you seem to have plenty of other kit, so I'm sure you can fit a TV in!
