This probably applies to no-one else in the country bar me. However, in case it does. When I bought my ATC CA-2 pre-amp. in Dec. last year, my dealer assured me that the phono stage was an optional extra costing £400. I didn't bother taking one. I saw a review at the weekend which suggested that the mk.2 had phono as standard. Pulled my old Thorens/SME out of the cupboard & found I do have a phono stage. Nice bonus I think, though the thought of all that turntable faffing about needs to be weighed against the ability to play all these Chic 12"'rs I have in the loft. Is there such a thing as an automatic t/table any more as I always hated playing my singles without a safety net & lost several styli missing the vinyl & hitting the mat.

Depends how automatic - I seem to remember Pro-ject doing one that lifted the arm off at the end.

But with that amp, you need a gyro...

just looked on the Project site as i remembered there being an auto turntable, but they have updated the site and range.

and it aint there any more.

koolkeith:John - which Gyro/cartridge ?

Gyro SE and, if I was trying to keep costs down, an RB250 and an Ortofon 2M red. If I *wasn't* trying to keep costs down, I'd probably settle for the Michell Technoarm rather than go SME, and would be looking at Ortofon's Kontrapunkts, which I love - though sky's the limit really.

One thing I didn't check though was whether the ATC phono stage does moving coil, which if it doesn't would change the cartridge options somewhat.

JohnDuncan:Note that the gyro isn't automatic in any shape or form, but hey, who cares?

Don't you know that turntables are old hat these days JD, it's all about MP3 and iPod powerrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Super sound quality through mobile phones too, especially when playing loud on the bus.

Both Sony and Denon still produce fully automated turntables. There both budget tablesaround the £150 mark. I'm sure your Thorens/SME outfit would out perform those two.

Nads, your right Pro-Ject did make an auto turntable and i cant remember the model for sure. It wasn't long ago i was on the Pro-Ject site and it was their but it looks as though it's out of production now.

Quick update from pro-ject site.

Is there a Pro-Ject model with automatic end-of-side turn off?
Yes, the model 1 Xpression III Comfort has this feature. When the arm reaches the end of the side an opto-electronic sensor stops the motor and lifts the arm off the record. It does not return the arm to the arm rest.
