OK - apologies in advance if the answer to this is "bleedin' obvious" to most people on this forum ...

Can someone explain to me what the difference is between having a dedicated CD player in your audio setup, and using your DVD or Blu-Ray player to play your CDs through the Surround Amp / Receiver. I am not really dissatisfied with how the CDs sound using my existing equipment - do I need to go to the expense of an additional CD player?

Particularly as music is more often than not played from versions ripped to hard disk or iPod now anyway.

Thanks

In the simplest terms, a cd player is optimised to play cd's while a dvd/blu-ray player is optimised to do just that, i.e., play dvd's and blu-ray's.

While a dvd/blu-ray player will no doubt be able to carry out cd playback, this would be a secondary function this exists as a means of convenience.

The same argument will apply to AV Receivers and Stereo amps - one is again optimised for movies while the other is optimised for music.

As you are 'not dissatisfied' ... why bother? I have a pioneer BR player and it sounds perfectly ok with cd's. But, even compared with a relatively inexpensive cd player, it has audible limitations. - Problem is, once you start on that road you'd probably soon find faults with some of your other equipment.

I agree and in particular, a budget cd player will not sound that much better than a dvd/bd player when connected to an AV receiver rather than a stereo amp. For me a cd played in a £200 cd player via a £400 AV receiver will not sound as good as one played in a £200 dvd player via a £400 stereo amp.

Agreed. Keep hi-fi separate from home cinema.

Well explained.
