Hello all, I'm new here. I have a question or two..

I have a Rega Planar 2 purchased in 1986 with an A&R Cambridge P77 cartridge that is still in perfect condition and plays fine.

Due to its age and uncertain condition of the stylus I would like to replace the cartridge but can anyone recommend what with please?

On the other hand I was thinking of selling the Rega on ebay and buying somthing new, would a new Rega RP1 be better than my old Planar 2?

Any thoughts or advice welcome - thanks

Just gone on the web. There is a company named Musonic based in the UK that do replacement stylii for £31.50 if you don't wont to replace the cartridge. I have not used them so have no idea if any good. They also recomment Nagaoka carts if you wanna go that route. Most guys on here recommend Nags. I have no idea where the best deals are.

There are a few specialists that will rebuild and/or retip any cartridge. Try Goldring.co.uk or the Expert stylus and cartridge co, in Ashtead, Surrey.

In case it isn't obvious, the cartridge does not wear out. All the moving and wearing parts are in the stylus assembly.

Oh, and LA has named another source I had forgotten. Also, I would hesitate to replace your tt with a RP1. If its v old with a worn out s shaped Acos arm then replace the arm, but the newer version with the straight Rega arm should last and last! You can get it serviced too.

Thanks everone for your advice. I hadn't discovered Musonic before and had given up trying to find a replacement stylus but this may be the best way to go - cheers

^ Glad to be of help, but thanks should really go to Lost Angeles for mentioning Musonic, my replacement stylus is already on its way! I am looking forward to exploring all my treasured old vinyl again and the warmer sound contained in those grooves :)
