Hi,

I've just purchased a new Sony KDL-46EX503 TV and Sony BDP-S570 blu-ray player. I already have my an old Sony STR-DB940 AV receiver hooked up to my PC and KEF Reference 1.2 speakers. I've also acquired an Arcam DV89 DVD player and Kef 2005.2 speaker system. I'm trying to work out what cabling and connectors I need.

Ideally I would like to use my Arcam for music/DVD's hooked up to the KEF 2005.2 speaker system and the Sony for Blu-Ray. The AV receiver is quite old and doesn't therefore support HDMI but is DTS. I don't yet have the cash to replace the AV receiver so for now I need to make do.

Obviously I need an HDMI cable for blu-ray to TV but not sure whether 1.3 or 1.4? For sound as the Blu-ray doesn't have multi-channel analogue out I'm guessing I'm limited to optical or coax into the AV receiver?

My old TV is hooked up to the Arcam via Scart but not sure whether this is still best with the new TV? As for sound - am I best using an analogue interconnect or a digital one?

Right that's the brain dump complete!

Ed.

Is the Kef 2005.2 full 5.1?

If so, Unless your using the Ref 1.2s for front left and right, and the rest for extended surround/ full 7.1 (which I'm not sure the DB940 can do). I can't see how you're gonna connect up all these speakers.

Also. I'd seriously consider using the '570 for both BD and DVD. The Arcam is a great player, but you'll be stuck using component outputs (the best quality outputs it has) for video and it can't upscale anywhere close to 1080p with DVD like the Sony can.

I'd keep the Arcam for CD duties. Connect it to your '940 with a pair of regular interconnects.

Hi thanks for the advice. Yeah I want to hang onto the Arcam but might be best to limit it's duties to CD. The KEF reference 1.2 speakers will be decoupled until I get a dedicated music Amp.

The Sony will only do 5.1 unfortunately.

One more thing will the length of the HDMI cable affect the quality?

So for Arcam to AV analogue interconnects would be the best? and Optical from blu-ray to AV seen as the Blu-ray doesn't have multi-channel analogue out?

HDMI length can have an effect, but you should be OK if you plump for a decent one.

Yeah. Use a pair of regular interconnects from the Arcam to the '940 for CD.

Use a decent HDMI from Blu-Ray to the TV, and either an optical or a co-ax digital cable from the Blu-Ray to the '940 for your surround sound.

Obviously, you'll need a sub cable from the '940 to the sub. and speaker cable to all the satellite speakers.
