I have been offered a CD73T in really good condition at very reasonable price and am wondering how this player compares with the Cambridge CA 640C in terms of detail, soundstage, lows/highs etc

Ideally what I am after is a more refined, smoother/warmer sound than the CA which sometimes I find bright.

BTW my speakers are being changed shortly to EB Acoustics EB1.

Music wise I listen to all sorts from Jazz, Soul, Funk, Chilled and Pop.

Cheers

Tony

I'd be inclined to think along these lines too. Two very different presentations by all accounts, with the Arcam leaning nearer to what it sounds like you're looking for from your system.

I demo'd a CA640v2 at home for a few days and ended up buying an Arcam CD73T.

The Arcam is far superior and sounds much much better than the CA to me. I only changed the CD73 to upgrade further up the Arcam path.

Yup, agreed - the 73T would get my vote (biased of course) and the upgrade path is very tempting when the coffers allow.....

Haha, goes to show how subjective these things are. I have owned both these CD players and the Cambridge won hands down. It was such a lively fun little CD player, whereas I found the Arcam to be dull, lifeless and boring. The Arcam did improve a little with a quality silver interconnect, but I would never recommend it. Cambridge wins that duel easily lol.

Perhaps so, but that's not the question that the OP was asking...I used to like bright and detailed too, to the point of forensic, but found that too much of an analytical approach killed the music for me. Out went the Marantz amp!

That pretty much confirms what I have read elsewhere. I've nothing to lose by giving the CD73 a go and if its not to my taste then I guess I can sell it on. Thanks all for your replies. Tony

Hi,

I have tried both players, I owned the CA 640c v2 for 9 months and sold it. I found for rock and pop I preferred the CA 640c v2 for its bright, punchy and lively approach (Arcam was boring) but for jazz, acoustic, classical I preferred the warm and more natural sounding Arcam (CA was to cold and digital sounding and fatigueing after awhile). The Arcam I found I could lose interest easily on the wrong kind of music. It will also depend on your equipment as system synergy is important. The CA I found better on valve gear, it does improve with a good power cord and warmer interconnects.

The creek evo is better than both and the new NAD c545bee is too(more balanced than the Arcam). Next price up consider rega apollo, and consonance cd-120 linear both excellent players. I have read the new rotel player and Harmon Karbon ND 990 are good players too.

Cheers,

Steve.
