Hi All. I've been out of the HI-fi loop for a number of years and welcome your advice/experience on the following.

I have a mid-'80s Rotel R850 Pre-amp/power amp which has given up the ghost and to add insult to injury taken one of the speakers with it! Have replaced the speakers with MA Bronze B2s.

The questions are:

1. Is the amp worth saving?

2. Do I replace with a used amp. Considering Arcam Apha 8/9 and Diva A65, Rotel RA-01/02, NAD C352.

3. Buy new

My budget is £150 - £200.

Welcome your thoughts.

Has all of it failed? The fact that it damaged the speakers too suggests a failure in the power amp, so it may well be worth keeping the preamp and getting the power amp repaired.

The Rotel was a good mainstream pre/power in its day, and is well worth saving.

Yes it's the power amp that's gone. I have been pleased with it but then it's not until you get into a Mondeo that you realise your cherished Cortina is slightly out of date! (Apologies for the car analogy). I have had mixed feedback on the quality of the pre-amp so wondered with modern technology whether now is the time for a change given the price of quality amps secondhand and the probable cost of repair?
